Help! ... I pulled the distributor out of my 327/300. Before I pulled it out:I left the rotor pointing straight ahead and marked the firewall. As I pulled the distributor out the rotor rotated counterclock wise about 20 degrees and marked that spot. So far so good.. I go to put the distributor in. I face the rotor where it came out. The rotor then rotates clockwise 20 degrees and goes in ... but does not seat! ( Although it is facing the direction it should )
I look at the oil pump notch in the engine and it seems to be 20 degrees further. To verify this I put the distributor in with the rotor facing the direction where it originally sat ... as it should during installing the rotor rotates clockwise and seats perfectly. The problem is the rotor is facing 20 degrees further clockwise then when it originally came out???
Now what ???? ... I haven't tryed starting the engine yet.

Take a long bladed screwdriver and insert it into the oil pump notch and move it back where you think it should be and try inserting the distributor again. The oil pump notch probably moved a bit when you removed the distributor.

Studiog is right - set the rotor to where it was when it disengaged, and line the oil pump drive slot to accept the distributor drive in that position. When you lower the distributor, the rotor will return to the first position that you marked, and the oil pump will be engaged.

Thanks all for the info ! ... I moved the oil slot about 20 degrees counterclockwise and the distributor fell right in to where it was originally. I can't understand how that slot moved that far ???? ... Oh well it's in now! Hopefully it will start up next week . Thanks again...Ed
