I was told that the small block and big block tach drive distributors are the same just the small aluminum band at top of the shaft stamped with the part number was the only difference. Is this true?? Will it fit and perform the same on any 68-74 small and big blocks?

That's correct - the distributors are the same between SB's and BB's, except for internal advance curve calibration parts that adapt the distributor to specific applications (autocam shape, centrifugal advance weights and springs, and the vacuum advance can); those are the parts that determine what part number is on the aluminum I.D. band. Set up the advance curve the way you want it, and they'll work in any SB or BB engine.
