Im wanting to throw an Edelbrock Performer and Holly650cfm carb on my 81' but I think Im gonna run into problems w/ the computer. In Burglars walkthrough he noted that the problem he ran into was the coolant temp sensor. There was no provision for it. I just found the check engine light problem of mine and it was the CTS (code 15) w/ the help of Mike (Stingray6974). THe wires were frayed at the connection so they just needed repairing, so I could care less if I get rid of it. If I lose this though is my Check Engine light going to stay on?

What exactly does the computer control? All the sensors, the carb, and the timing? With the Holly manual choke, cant I just lose the CTS and get rid of the O2sensor as well when I put on the headers? That would leave like three sensors left correct? If the computer gets negative feedback from losing the sensors is it going change the performance because of the TPS on the Holly, or will it remain the same. Will the timing of the HEI Distrib. remain uneffected too?

So basically are the performance gains of the dual plane intake worth losing all the computer monitoring or are the gains from changing one aluminum intake for another minimal? I do have the stock Q-jet on as well so will the Holly adn the Performer make me grin from ear to ear or will I just be wasting money? Im going to get a new engine as soon as this one takes a dump on me so I wanna rock this one till it does you know. I cant stand to spend 6K on a motor when I got a perfectly good one now. And who knows maybe Ill get a good enough gain from the combo that Ill be happy for 5 years. Help me out here.

By the way I wouldnt be nearly as happy w/ this beauty if I didnt have the CAC here to help me out! Thanks alot guys and gals.

If you want this to work right you will have to get a standard HEI distributor with vacuum advance. That coupled with your new intake and carb...the computer will be functionless. You will have a check engine light glowing until you yank the bulb, and you will have a mess of excess wires that go nowhere under the hood.

I don't think you are going to see a major performance improvement on just these items. To make this car kick, you will need headers, cam, better heads, higher compression...and a comprehensive tuning package on your distributor and jets.

I do believe you would do better for now making sure your computorized stuff is working top notch, and save your money and time for the big bad motor replacement.

You can go to the autopart store and get a standard HEI for about $99 plus the core charge. Get one for a 75-77 V8 chevy.

put the intake on and drive it!

For the $115 investment on an intake I was pleased with the results on my car. Install the 2101 intake with the original carb for now. Its good for 15-20 hp. Get the car tuned properly like Chris said and just drive it! You'll need to drill and tap the intake for that sensor but that is easy, just follow my directions in my installation post.

Awww man, 2 different opinions. Im wanting to do this primarily cause of the deal I got on this setup. If Im not going to get about 20HP out of it plus better acceleration and response from the Holly then it just seems like its not going to be worth it.

I already have true duals w/ no cats and dual Flowmasters. Would I be better off getting headers instead of this setup?
