Whenever I park my BB after driving it for a short time in 80 deg.heat, my radiator leaks antifreeze out the overflow. Is this normal and why dosent my car have an overflow like some cars I've seen.

My guess is that you have too much fluid in there, do you keep adding after it pukes?

No, last time I checked it down about 3 inches from top. Did someone eliminate my overflow tank or did they not exist on 67 427s? thanks Sting Ray..

There isn't an overflow tanks on Any midyear bigblocks except the '65 and the L-88, What is the temperature that your car is running at normally?

Tom M

Tom,
No I dont . Guess I'll pull it out tomarrow and replace w/ new one. Do you think thats the problem? Whats normal running temp? Thanks again Tom

Mine runs between 190 and 210 most of the time, you might have to high a thermostat, in there and it isn't opening if this is just a short trip, then it is boiling over when you get home from the heat soak.

Tom

Thanks Tom. Can you tell me what temp. thermastat your running. I also wonder if my gauge is reading correctly, but wouldnt explain the boil over. I bet your rite about thermostat.I'll keepyou posted. Again, thanks for your help.. Jim

Puking out the overflow hose during heat-soak after shutdown isn't unusual (the coolant is still absorbing engine heat and isn't being circulated through the radiator, and "hot-spots" form, causing it to boil locally). Two things usually cause this - an over-filled radiator, or a radiator cap with a bad seal or spring. Don't keep topping up the radiator - check it COLD to the "Full Cold" embossment on the side tank and leave it alone; that provides space for it to expand during operation and heat-soak without being pushed out of the overflow hose. Have your cap checked to make sure it's still sealing at its rated pressure; a 50-50 mix of coolant (check your concentration) won't boil until 265*F when it's under 15 pounds pressure.
