...this is from my one 1989 and as I recall, my other 89 box has a tube inlet which is obviously missing on this one, as it has been opened up greatly :eek

That is exactly what mine looks like. It also seems to use the same K&N filter element I mentioned in the other air filter post.
 
Wow, overall shape is the same but Callaway logo is more central like yours. I think the more we get into this stuff the FLUID change during production is coming out!
 
My '88 is like the second air box pictured (without the flap). If memory is correct, I read that the air box could take on water under a specific condition (the headlights being turned on after standing in the rain, the rotation of a rain covered headlight could dump water into the air box due to its location being in the front right corner of the 1988 model) I believe that is what the flap may be trying to minimize in the first photo, if the location is the same from '88 to '89.
