It seems that there is always something to do on my mid-year.

Even though it is fun tinkering around and doing most of it myself,
I'm kinda getting tired of monkeying around with it.

It is not a Top Flight car, but a really nice original driver

While I've not had the car for very long, I'm thinking about selling it.

Any of you go through the same thing?

I will never get to that stage. She'll be long gone way before that.

I just got my top flight '67 427/400hp vette. I am afraid to drive it! I want to drive it, but man, then I would have to clean the under side, etc. What to do :confused

However, I will not sell this baby, unless someone has $$$$ :booty

Pedro,Lets talk here.I find the most fun to be wrenching on the cars. What problem have you recentley encountered thats frustrating you?.I have had collector cars forever. And yes if your doing it correct there is always something to piddle with,But its never supposed to be UNFUN.
How can I help you whats making it UNFUN,Any of the cars I own or have owned were built/restored so they can drive anyplace relaibly. If some thing is broken or incorrect and causing you heart ache or greif eliminate that problem and move on to the next problem. And belive me I am no rich guy I have to work like a dog to get my money just like every one else,I pretty much do all my own wrenching on the collector cars.

I have always said when the cars become unfun I will move on to the next thing to burn up my excess energy but until then I am having a BLAST

Also so you know that C5 of your is spoiling you,I have times where the only time I take out my C2 is for a local cruise or show because I love the comfort of the C5,

I agree with Larry. If it has become unfun than sell the car. I really would almost rather work on the car than drive it, but then that is just me.

Larry,
You're probably right. My C5 is pretty sweet and virtually trouble free. When something has gone wrong, it was/is under warranty.

Most of the stuff that I've fixed or had fixed on the car has not been major. I've actually enjoyed doing some of it myself. I'm no mechanic though, and guess I'm just at a point where I don't want to be bothered with it.
Maybe I just needed to get my "mid-year fever" out of my system.

I appreciate your words and you're right. This is supposed to be fun.

I'll be making a decision soon.

Pedro

If you have a mid year.. you will have to wrench!

Unless you do a FULL rebuild on the car.. and even then you will have maint issues to deal with.. it will NEVER be a Toyota.. ( just jump in it & drive)..

Lets get real here... a mid...midyear 1965 is 38 year OLD technology.

My 64 was a BEATER( in it's previous life ).. and I'm DOING SO MUCH to make it right.. and EVERYTIME I take her out.. something happens... maybe minor...but SOMETHING.. and I've had the car since APRIL FOOLS DAY this year.

"Does it ever end?"

NO...

You just have to say.. I'm gonna deal with it... or not.

I'm gonna deal...are you?

I have been thinking a lot about your post over the last few days. I'm not sure what the difference is - car - intended use of the car - people - training - problems - - but I actually enjoy working on the old beast.

I was raised on old American iron. They wore out by 50,000 miles. Tires were shot by 17,000, ditto brakes. Engines began leaking at 12,000 and needed rebuilds by 50,000 to stay clean. having a car that went 100,000 made you a legend.

I can remember my dad telling me about all the old (preWW2) cars he stuck rings and bearings in at half the intervals of the 50s-60s cars.

I guess the bottom line in owning a car made during the period of "planned obsolescence" is that even if you apply all the new technology that is available in terms of bearings, seals, and gaskets, you can't get away from working on a vehicle that has exceeded its design life 6 times over.

If you want the correct perspective, read "Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance" by Pirsig. It will transform your relationship with machines and men.

I agree with Vig. I have listened to his saga since the prepurchase of his "Beast from the East". It has been a labor of love. If you are not luvin it sell it. You'll be happier and a few bucks richer to boot.

Fifteen years ago I had a jeep I built up to be really nice, but got tired of working on and sold. I kicked myself ever since. I won't make that mistake on my vette. I just learned to take breaks.

Yes,
You guys are right. It is fun working on our babies.
I just got a little frustrated and said the hell with it!
A buddy of mine came over the a couple of days ago to help me put in some points and a new rotor.
I let him drive the car and he couldn't stop grinnin'!

He made a comment to me about a car that he fixed/souped up in
the seventies that kinda sums it up for me.
He said:
"It's kinda neat to work on something on these old cars and they still run." :D Meaning you learn as you go along sometimes.
Seriously, it is rewarding to be able to do a lot of the stuff on these cars yourself. It's also great to have a resource like this forum with so many knowledgeable people willing to help.

Remember the old after shave commercial where the guy slaps himself in the face and says, "Thanks, I needed that".
Well, my buddy and you guys were that slap in the face to me.

Thanks guys, I needed that.

Now, where did I put that wrench? :D

Pedro

Look at the bright side. at least you aren't working on something with a thousand sensors and computers to figure out.
To bastardize a quote from "The Mexican"
"When you love something, at what point do you say enough is enough?
