My 86 coupe seems to have a problem since I bought it.....don't know if it is normal or not. Every time I hit a bump, the hood seems to shake as if it was not attached properly to the car. I have checked the front hinges, and they seem tight and the moulding in front of the windshield has been replaced? Am I missing something, just stupid, or it it normal for a car with 97,000 miles????

My 94 does the same thing with 52k miles. Somedays it shakes and squeaks and sometimes it doesn't. It changes without me touching it. I figured it was just my baby asking for more throttle!

Maybe

I don't know but my 90 does it too. Ive got a little shake at around 85 on the Interstate also. Especially noticable over the passenger side. My cousins 84 did it also.

I think it has something to do with the play around the hood pins and their locking counter parts near the firewall but I could be wrong.

By the way we have roughly the same mileage but my cousins was new and it still did it.

I would carefully check if she's locking down correctly, I have no shake except for the shake, rattle and roll of my premium BOSE stereo:(

I agree with c4ever - check the latches. The hood on my 92, w/98k miles, doesn't shake.

It latches completely. That was my first thought. If you push or pull on the hood it doesn't move at all. So I dunno.

Mine latches and won't budge when I pull on it. I can see it move just a little over bumps but mainly it just squeaks.

the first thng I checked was the latches near the windshield....they lock tight. Then I opened the hood and rocked it and the whole car moved with the hood. Then closed the hood and rocked it and the whole car rocked in unison.

The only thing I can think is that the rubber weatherstripping at the top of the fender wells is "squished" and allows the hood to shake. I wonder if replacing that weatherstriping would make any difference?????

This is interesting. I have never experienced any shaking or movement (not even a squeek) from my hood under and circumstances. ????

Shaking??????????

Did you ever think that maybe you were shaking and not the hood!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Check that the hood bumbers are screwed in tight and that they fit properly or else they can cause the hood to shake. You can replace them for under $20. When the hood close's they shoud be snug against the hood. Being that you will be unable to see this, it will be trial and error.

The reason that they are worse sometimes then others, can be simpley the temperature.

The next time you need an oil change, bring it to a dealer that has a mechanic that is vette knowledgeable, and have him look at it. This will save you a lot of time.

Like Kingman mentioned, check the adjustment of the 4 hood bumpers to make sure they are all contacting the hood. Try turning them down away from the hood and place a film of grease on the rubber bumper portion. Clean the contact points on the hood and close it. Open it back up to check if there is grease on the hood contact points. Do this until you have the same sized grease mark on each of the 4 hood locations.

The rubber covers on these will wear and get brittle after time and you may have some that do not do their job so replacement may be the key.

Hood on my 86 shakes a bit, down by the lights - not up by the windshield. I just consider it part of the overall flex that early C4's exhibit.
