Hi

I just ordered one from a member and even though l have the installation instructions is it an easy fix or should l let a pro do it?

Also l am not familiar with the refill kit or whatever it's called to clean it. What is it exactly andwhere can l buy it.

thanks

Alan

The install is easy. One thing though, when you take off the original air filter cover you will have to push mughty hard to get the cover off of the studs that hold it in place.

I recommend taking the unit off as one peice up to the throttle body. It makes things easier.

When you reassemble the unit be careful and go slowly when you slide the coupler onto the MAF. You don't want to bend any of the vanes.

As far as the cleaning kit, there are some vendors that sell it. Unlike the K&N kit, I have never seen the Blackwing cleaning kit in a car parts store.

Thanks

That is what concerned me about this installation l hate putting undue pressure on anything and but once you do it the next time is a piece of cake.

When it comes l will check it out and do several dry runs before l start it. My vette is perfect and l would hate to even cause a slight scratch.

For some reason l get anal about the dumbest things.

What about the battery, should l disconnect the neg?

Thanks

No reason to. Bottom line is, you're just replacing the air filter. (Although you do have to transfer a sensor - depending on year).

Just make sure you have everything where you want it before you start tightening the clamps.

Hi

I have a 2002 and the Blackwing came out of a 2002. Does this require transfer?

Great tips

OK l now feel comfortable doing it myself.

What about the coolant bypass is it worth it?

Remo is this how you got to 450 hp?? Only kidding!

Thanks

Yes the Donaldson Blackwing was the secret. The problem is that you have to get Lingenfelter to install it to get the car up to 450 HP.:L

Trip to Staten Island !!!!

Hi Warren

When l get the Blackwing and examine it and probably clean it l will drop you a line.

Are you familiar with the Blackwing?

Keep in mind that l'm 15 minutes from Englishtown (East) but the trip to Staten Island is probably only 30 minutes.

Alan

Lingenfelter ????????????

That names screams $$$$$$$$$$$$ & HP.

450 HP has a great ring to it and the Lingenfelter is one of the few names that you can really get paid for when you decide to sell.

Here is a pictorial off my 1999 C5 when I installed the donaldson air filter.

IF you clean the filter before using it? If its necessary? Then run the water from the inside out and let dry..

then lightly oil.. let dry..

The biggest mistake people make is overoiling and you don't want any oil to get on the Maf...(so thats my suggestion...DON"T OVER OIL)

Let it dry and then install.

(the 2001 has a different maf wire if I remember correctly) Not two has shown here..

Thanks

I'll remember that, never thought about it.

I have not done a blackwing install, but i am sure its within my skill level, just in case it exceeds your confort level.

Alan,

if its a new filter don't oil it. If its not dirty don't clean it.

if its a used filter...just look it over and then decide.

First time installation? should take 30 minutes..

From then on? probably 15 minutes..if that...its a quick job to pull off and clean if you need to later on)

I noticed you have a 2002...C5..

Do you have the coupler they used to mount the donaldson airfilter to the maf?

The reason I ask and I've never done one of those before (I had a 1999) I remember the coupler was added later on so the donaldson unit could fit onto the larger 2001 and newer maf units used by GM...

BTW...

Yours doesn't have the double maf and other wire...seperate...

Yours as a 2002 has the single maf wire connection...which has a little pin that must be pulled up...then you push in on the center piece of the side maf plug and pull upward..

Any corvette tech could do it for you in 15 minutes ...too...

Be careful with the maf wires..you don't want to damage them. (my photo illiustration is for a 1999 c5)

when you get to the last stage of removing stock air box..you stick your arm between the hood and the front bumper and push on each corner of the stock air box...thats what pops the stock air box off the rubber grommets that you will reuse for the donaldson air filter connection..(if you can't find one after removing the stock box...look in the holes for the stock box..or stick your arm down in the well of where the stock air box used to be..sometimes they fall off down there..

...first push through on one side of the air box... and then the other..

When replacing the rubber grommets that hold the stock air box to the front bumper...I suggest using soapy water to get the donaldson to go back on...

Good luck..and from the sound of it? I might suggest you watch someone do it the first time...

You could probably pull into a chevy dealer..find a tech and ask him to do it too.. They can pull that stock air box off in about 20 seconds...disconnect the maf wire too...Its money well spent sometimes.. (at most 1/2 hour labor I'd bet..)

Then watch...and do it yourself next time...(when buying new don't oil the filter for sure unless the vendor told you to do so..) (sorry to repeat myself)

HTH..

I hate to do something that l'm not skilled at or at least done before. When it arrives l will see what it actually looks like and make sure that it has all the parts. Then l will order the kit to clean it and oil it.

At that point in time l will get in touch with you and work out a meeting.

Alan

Alan,

My Blackwing arrived yesterday. I plan to install it this morning so I'll let you know how it goes:D. I will have to clean and oil mine first though. Fortunately the seller sent me a cleaning kit.

Granted, I'm adventurous to a fault when it comes to my rides and will try anything twice;LOL.

Hi Eric

Also let me know if you are disconnecting your battery? Also the sensor is different on mine then yours. it changed l believe in 01.

Also l was told to be carefull of the MAF and to use a lube when reconnecting the bellows.

Read this thread again there are two different intruction offered one better then the other.

Mine is only going to be sent out next week.

Good Luck

Alan

Sorry if I caused any confusion. Definitely follow the other peoples advice or directions..

Mine were just notes I made that I thought could help someone..

Its really a very easy job...its just if you haven't done it before? I remember I scatched my head back in 1999 and said...What should I do to install this.

Just trying to help.

Youll enjoy the results...
