The drivers door on my 75 convertible is out of align and hard to close. Upon inspection of the hinges, I noticed that the upper hinge has a broken return pin (that thing that holds the door open) I would guess that the bushings are bad too. If I try to lift up or down on the door I don't get any movement. The passenger side door shuts smoothly. Can anyone give me advise on changing these hinges?;help I was going to just change the top one but then figured that if I have the whole thing openned up I should change them both. I found them for around $60 each. is that a good price?(rebuilt). Is this something a shade tree mechanic can do?;shrug
Looking forward to your suggestions.

I changed the pins and bushings in my drivers door, by my self,I had a box about the height of mid door, I braced up the bottom of the door then removed the bolts out of the door side hinge, lowered the door to the box, pull out the wiring just a little, then drive the pins out from the bottom, the bushing wil come out with the pins, put the new bushings in one bushing goes down and the other goes up (Check yours and be sure)and then tap the pins back in, lift the door back into place and tighten up the bolts to the hinges, then you can align the door latch striker, that should get you in the ball park, It is a little tuff to balance the door and put the bolts in the hinge at the same time, Just take your time, the pins and bushing at the Chevy dealer are about $6.00 a set. :drink :drink :drink

Brew,

That sounds like something I could do. Did you change that thing that keeps the door open? Mine is broken but still hanging in the hole. Did you take the door side bolts all the way out and pull the door away? I will check the dealer and see if they have the bushing and pins.

Most of the Vette parts mail order houses have the pins & bushings as well as the spring you are refering to. You may need to go with oversize bushing if the hinge holes are worn. You need to drill the hole to the new bushing size. To fully replace the hinges, the door panel needs to come off an realignment can be a bear. Its really easier if you have a friend help. I used a floor jack (cushioned with carpet) to align the door. You may also need to adjust/replace the alignment pin housing (about $80 from GM restoration or a catalogue) to get a nice final result.
