When the car is on the ground, the door hits the body when it closes. If I have the car up on jacks, there is a (aprox.) 1/4" even gap all the way around. Any ideas what is causing this?

Thanks,
Rick

Check the door hinge pins as gm cars ARE prone to wear them out to the weight of the doors.....just a hunch..these are the pins in the front of the doors

Rick,

I agree with what has already been said but curiosity begs a couple of questions. Did it do this when it first arrived from NY or is this a new occurance. Is your garage floor level? Does it do it regardless of how/where the car is parked so long as it's not jacked up? Reason I ask is that the 71 never scraped but if I had it parked nose first and left it in the driveway the passenger door was a pain to shut but was fine just about anywhere else. Again, this was an issue of flex.

BTW, nice new photos you have there! Sorry for staying off-topic but are you taking her to the NCRS Winter Regionals in January?

I don't belive that it was like this when it came. I have had several things happen since I started "driving" the car.

Yes.

As soon as I start jacking the car and about 80% of the weight is on the jack (not the tire), I have the proper gap.

And the door pins are OK.

I've been looking at the body mount just in front of the rear wheel. If a shim can go in there, would it produce the correct result? Is this a job that "I" want to do? How much would a shop charge? I love working on the car, but this might be one that is more than I can handle. NOW, if Chirs (69MyWay) lived south about 200 miles, I would be in GREAT shape!

Good question. I emailed the state chapter, and NEVER heard from them. I don't remember who you contacted, but they didn't contact me either. So I don't know.

F-R-M...

-If your Chassis-frame is sound, then your FactoryRepairManual is quite beneficial toward correcting this condition; -and best remove the Door/Striker-bolt so that you can better evaluate what is happening under various conditions; --plus with the door open about 8-inches, try muscling the door-end up&down to reveal if you've hinge-wear or simply a loose-hinge mounting...
