I have seen quite a lot of posts about locks and good advice for lock problems that quite a few of us seem to be having.

I have two problems that haven't really been adressed.

1) The outer door lock turns freely and does not put torque to the lock mechanism. I know I need to replace this...Here's the problem: I purchased some fishing pliers and can grab on the clip, it just won't move. Do I need to just pull harder? I feel like I could screw up the fiberglass if I pull too hard.

2) I also have problems with the outside handle. The spring that is attached to the handle is no longer attached. Does anyone have a picture of where the spring for the outer handle attaches to the control rod? If I order a new door handle does it come with the spring attached and a new rod?

Thanks for advice!!!!!

As to #2, you have two options; replace the handle or replace the spring. I ended up replacing the handle as I had read that replacing the spring does not really do the job with the spring failing.

Its a tight job with getting one small screw into place particularly difficult. It takes very small hands.

One more option that is easier and adds a bonus. My car came with an alarm system but it did not work the locks. I had it hooked back up correctly because I could no longer unlock my door half the time. Now I can just unlock everything with no problem with keyless entry. :)

Bender,
This is an option I've thought about. The only "problem" is the 76 was not set up for power locks. Does a keyless entry system typically come with an actuator for the rods? I would still need to replace the outer door lock in case the actuator failed or the key fob battery died. Does anyone who has done this conversion on an earlier model have recomendations?

To get the clip off you need to twist with your wrist back and forth while pulling straight down.
