berlina vette rides again!

all
thought i would follow up on my tires
ended up getting some 235 75 15s took away alot of my problems with the new ones

i want now to try to improve the ride and maybe handling

first for the ride
i see that there are some aftermarket spring shocks kits
or
???thoughts for single shocks or springs to concider??
would they really make a radical change in the ride??

knowing c 3s especially are known for there rough ride... even the c 5 ride would be a great improvement....would like to save my kidneys!

for handling.....how about steeroids rack pinion bolt on kits??

thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaanks

The coil-over shocks are only going to give you a harder ride. since we're dealing with a customized car, the ride and handling is due in large part to whatever the engineer or custom shops changes. But i think that if for one, you changed out the seven, or nine leaf steel rear spring with say a 550 lbs TRW fiberglas spring a lot of ride quality would be realized. Likewise changing the front coils to a better compression rate would help there. Also I'd go with a set of GM gas shock all the way around. Doing this I got my C-3 to ride even better than my C-5 !

berlina/vette on its way to saving my kidneys!

sir killain/all

once again!
thanks for saving me a lot of money and time
i will follow your advice to the T

if you don t mind ...another dumb ?

with all the front coils on the market
whats a good rating or brand that you put on yours??

i assume that for the rear that a composite 330 is what you were thinking and the 355 lbs may be too stiff and result in a harder ride???
any one that you would suggest
best place to buy??

you suggested gm/delco shocks
is it for there ride??
or are the bilsteins or the pricey edelbrocks worth the money????

thoughts on the bolt on rack and pinion for handling
i was told that it would give me more of a c5 feel/handling
when driving down the road

sorry for all the ?
but all you vette techies ...
forgot more then most people will ever know
trust me us rookies really appreciate it!

look forward to yours and others thoughts/suggestions~

mr K
sorry
i screwed up i meant to ask on the rear
where you suggested 550lbs and most i have seen is much lower
will the 550s be a lot stiffer resulting in rougher ride??
and if 550s are what i need
best place to buy??

Ok the stock spring rate for a 79 Vette which weighted at about 3575 LBS was 295, the rate at the wheel was 117.6, but your dealing with a car that weights significantly more dur to increase in lenght, frame addition and body weight. So I would assume at least 330 lb spring rate would be on the low side if it were me. but again I'm not an engineer. Also the Gymkhana spring suspension package was with rpo FE7 and stiffer springs. Also while not avalible in the seventies, I'd install a set of GM Gas shocks, they are affortable and do an excellant job. Plus combining them with a TRW fiberglas spring at the rear, ( the stock spring rate at the rear is 198.0lb and at the wheel of 151.4lbs, so again your going to want a spring that is capible of carring the additional weight of your stretched vehical. I'd do some homework at the GM performanced parts website as well as perhaps the TRW website looking for information about the products they can provide. You should have an addition to your owners manual that gives the specs as they pertain to your customized Vette.

mr k
got it fyi.....
they gave a stock corvette manual with the car that tells me most oif the mech interior stuff/specs
but i have a berlina fact sheet that says 180 inches long ...about short of two feet longer then the stock vette
it also says.... 72 wide hi 50 wheel base as 129 inches track fr/r is 58.7/59.5
and weight says aprox 3540 hmmmm ....seems a little light

so i will go with your suggestions and also check out gm site
i m going to put in action next week
i ll let you know how it turns out
i hope for my kidneys sake that i have half of your luck in getting it close to a c5 ride

have a great weekend!

It's interesting that the manufacturer listed it at only3540, the standard 79 Corvette 2 door sport coupe 1XZ87 comes in at 3503. But in addition to what I said, I'd also talk to any limousine builders if they are close to you. They could weight the car and perhaps recommed some inprovement as well. Good luck !

mr K

i agree.... your thoughts were right on
and i will talk to some limo people
also others have told me to be sure to get the right match on the springs and the shocks because if i don t
beware of bounce effect that the switch to fibergass springs will make

now to check out the benifits of rack and pinion then i am ready to rock and roll not the berlina/vette

i ll let folks know how my half breed turns out!
