Drive C4 year round?

Vettelt193 said:
Now that I have my '96 back, it is my daily driver... I don't care about the miles I am putting on it, or the scratches here and there, or changing things to my liking. I bought this car to drive, and if it gets hit then I will fix it (if it is a total wreck, then i will buy another one)

In summary: I am having fun again because I drive my 'Vette, and that is what Corvettes are all about.
I think the conversation has centered around driving vettes on snow covered roads. Do you get a lot of that in Tallahassee?

Not to get anyone riled up,but I think were talking Snow, right. How often do you see a measurable amount in Tallahassee Fla? I havent always lived in Alaska.Iam not worried about minor scratches etc,Just dont wish to trash it. Iam not worried about miles either as I drive all my toys too have fun

c4 year round.

Hi BarryK. Don't drive my 84 in Winter.Garaged till April.BarryK Aka Golfyl

I think every one has spoken about how comfy they are in the snow. I have to say that my car was hit in a snow storm in a parking lot. I still had no problem driving home and my car does well.

It is possible, depending on how much snow you get to drive a C4 all year long, but will probably be somewhat stressful, especially with all the idiot drivers with SUV's thinking they can fly down snow covered streets, just my opinion

I was caught in the snow once. It was a nice 30+ degree day and i figured i would drive to work, just to get it out. Well when i left work there was a good 5 or 6 inches on the roadways. I was suprised at how the car handled in the fluffy stuff. It is like any other car, except you have to be a little more careful. I should mention that by the time i got home the plows had gone down my road, and i coudn't get in my drive without an running start. The only time i got stuck was when i got out to open the garage door. I was somewhat pleased on how it handled i thought it would be much worse. It makes me more nervous driving my car in a rain storm, I feel i have even less traction.

My opinion is get a beater.

thanks to everyone for their replys

Besides the abilites or not in the snow (which seems to differ from one opinion to another) the other problem is my driveway which is a VERY steep incline. I hadn't thought about that until just now. My current daily driver, a Pontiac Grand Prix - the company car I need to return - is front wheel drive and handles the driveway in snow without too much problem but my wifes car which is a Lexus LS400 can barely make it up the drive in the snow even though it's a lot heavier of a car but it's rear wheel drive. Once or twice in the snow I really though her car was going to be stuck sitting outside on the street until I managed to put a LOT of ice down to get enough traction for her.
As much fun as having a C4 for a daily driver would be for me, I think logically and practically I'm going to have to go the "sensible" car route. I'm back to looking at the Jetta's and Accord's. The wife really wants a SUV for herself as a daily driver so maybe i'll look into one of those instead and just take her Lexus for myself.

At least I have my '65 to enjoy on nice days.

Barry - good idea. Now don't ever bring this subject up again. Unless you move to Tallahassee. In that case buy a C4 and drive it every day just like Vettelt193.

My point was made to counter the comment about leaving the corvette that we "care about" in the garage, so it doesn't get damaged. I have driven like that... not wanting them to get 'hurt' and it was much less fun than just driving it. In the end it is a car, and one that is meant to be driven.

C4's are not cars that are rare by any means, and all the parts for them are readily available... so if someone plows into your corvette, just hope and pray that you are safe, and get the car fixed. That is what insurance is for.

I just thought the excuse of not driving the car because you are worried about someone else hitting you (instead of using the excuse that the car is not drivable in certain conditions) is a bit lame.

Snow in Tallahassee? not often, which is one of the reasons why I live in Florida. The drivers are bad here though, and I am sure my car will get hit (again) sometime. I am just not going to worry about it. After all, my vette was hit before (rear-ended) and this was when I hardly ever drove the car... as a matter of fact, I was just driving it from one garage to another in GOOD conditions.

Some of these parts are discontinued and getting harder to find($$). Thay may be plentiful where you are,but nothing for vetts is readly available here. So if its wrecked you are out the time at the shop, time locating parts, shipping etc. More time you CANT use your toy. LAME? Now where did that come from? I guss I could consider living in a state of warm weather, lots of sunshine etc LAME.(EXCUSE?)When things are wrecked here there generly done. Ever see/hear fiberglass explode from cold? Gets to about -40 at times then take into the fact of moose on the roads durring the winter. Moose& Corvettes mating is not a good. LAME, OK ..Sure

Sorry to everyone for bring up this thread to begin with. I hadn't realized it was such a "sensitive" topic!
:)

Guess I'll slink back to the C2 forum where I'm safe and I won't bother anyone.
Thanks everyone for your replys and comments though.

Barry,

You shouldn't say that; we're not that kind of community. We're open to all questions.

Obviously, there is an extreme geographical difference in Alaska and the mainland US.

Keep asking your questions, they're not offending anyone. :w

Barry,

There's no reason whatsoever to apologize!! As Edmond said, we're not that kind of forum...questions, opinions, feedback are all welcome, no matter how often it has been discussed before! If you're new, you'd have no idea. Ask away!

Personally, though, I'm glad you're not going to drive a C4 year-round. In my opinion, it's not so much how or if the C4 would handle well...it's more like I don't trust other crazy drivers in snow and ice!;)

I think i speak for everyone when I say we were looking out for you in the long term. I personally think you would be unhappy driving a C4 in the winter.

Hey Barry,

No need to apologize, we just know the C4 and think as a majority that this type of car shouldn't be driven in the winter. However i have driven the car in the snow and dislike it as much as driving it in the rain. They are still great cars.

i drive mine mostly year round, and use my POS toyota for bad weather & driving to the hood.
