i am getting conflicting info..around town should i be driving my 86 coupe in D or in D with the square around it..i assume that is overdrive

This will depend on your driving style. If you don't drive your Vette like I drive mine then you can ease around town on the OD position and it will take advantage of those stretches where it can use the OD. To fill in the answer, my Vette only has two throttle settings, foot fully off or foot fully on the throttle.

If you are a spirited driver and don't get up to a steady speed in town then D should work okay. Keep the trans serviced.

Good luck,

are places like lee myles ok for tranny service..or are they the jiffy lube of trannys

Keep it in Drive for stop/go traffic. When you get out on the road put it in OD, it is very hard for the tranny to go in, and out of OD, and do not go up a incline in OD at a very low speed around 40 mphish.

I manually shift mine. I put it on OD when speed is above 40 mph and I'm not hard on the throttle.

side note car is 300,000 miles and 3rd tranny.

A/T preventive maintenance service is a relatively simple operation but is not uncommon to see it screwed up. Overfilling an a/t can result in transmission in blowing seals and other semi serious problems.. If you do not have facilities to do it yourself, find a shop that you TRUST to do it. That shop might be a Jiffy lube or an independent, but you need to KNOW that you can trust.

Good luck,

I keep mine in D around town too. {'86 Vette} The one thing that really gets me about the overdrive is that it kicks in way too early! Mine usually engages at about 41 or 42 mph. Up until recently I always did highway driving, but now I find myself doing only city. I also put in a bottle of Lucas trans treatment just for preventitive measures when I get the fluid changed.

Leave it in D unless youre over 45mph for an extended period. The 3-4 clutch pack is quick to wear out and you dont want it to start 'hunting', which causes wear.

Dramo, looks as though you live in NYC. As everyone says , leave it in drive and move to overdrive over 50 mph. In NYC there aint to many places to open it up but when you can have fun!!!!:lou

If I leave my tranny in OD, the trans allows the lockup overdrive to occur even while going uphill. Granted the L98 has enough torque to keep accelerating in OD uphill. Since the designers figure most people will keep their selectors in OD anyways, why did they allow the lockup to occur even under that kind of load if it's bad for the tranny?

Are you saying it's BETTER for me to intervene and keep the selector in D if under 45 mph ESPECIALLY under heavy load so that it stays off the overdrive?

I don't mind doing this....I'm just wondering

I would keep it in D under a heavy load. The lockup on mine kicks in at 38 mph. The overdrive won't kick in until 41-42 mph and after the car's coolant temp is over 122 degrees.
