I'm looking at a 90 coupe w/ a 6-spd z51/FX3 ~84k miles. Car looks clean & drives well. However there is a message on the DIC that says "INFL REST". It is in the lower center of the DIC. The car doesn't have the Low Pressure Warning system. Any idea of what this is indicating??. This Vette is real close to what I've been looking for, But I don't want to buy problems.....

TIA,

Bruce

Thanks, Doesn't sound like too big a deal. It did appear the "black box" module above the master cylinder had been replaced recently. I guess that could be the cause.

This is a very common problem on 1990 models. What happens is the grounding of the impact sensors on the frame rails become corroded, and when the sensors are not grounded it sends a code to the computer. You need to disconnect the battery, remove the sensors, sand down the frame rail, and re-ground them with dielectric grease. I'm about 99% sure that this is your problem because I read about it a lot and had the same problem on my 1990 convertible. Some unscrupulous sellers of 1990 corvettes will remove the light bulb behind the warning light.

INFL REST and seatbelt on, but no codes shown

I had first checked out all the posts that I could find dealing with this common problem with the 1990 cars. It sounded like 99% of the time if is a poor ground on one/both sensors in front, so I decided to take them off and clean them. I used dielectric grease just as suggested. Many of the posts gave the procedure on resetting the codes, first checking to see what the code was. I followed the procedures exactly as explained, but I can not get any codes to flash when I connect the "K" terminal to ground. Nor does the INFL REST light reset when I follow the remainder of the procedure.

When I attempt to pull the codes by turning the ignition off, connecting the "K" terminal to ground then turning on the ignition, the INFL REST light will turn off then back on once (not the code 12 three times as described) and that is it even when left for 60 seconds. I can make the Check Engine light pulse out its codes by connecting "A" and "B" so I know that I am doing it correctly.

Anyone have any additional suggestions for me? Is there another way to reset the INFL REST light? I know that I could cover the light with some tape, but I'd prefer to do it another way.

Thanks, Tim

I've had the same trouble with my 90 covertible - had it "fixed" by two dealership and now own 4 perfectly good front sensors! After it happened again, did the grind down frame rail and dielectric grease fix and reset the code with tool from Mid America - only lasts a short time and it comes back again, my car must be in the other 1% - any suggestions? If I go to another dealer they will charge me AGAIN for another sensor and install for about $250. It's annoying. Black tape over the DIC light not a bad fix, but that nagging seatbelt light is equally annoying.

Looking for some other suggestions.

Hey Kids, Had this problem with mine, frigged around grounding the correct term.in the ALDL con with no luck. Spent the 20 bucks and bought the KIT from someone(forgot who) and followed the directions EXACTLY!!!!!! that was 2 years ago and no problems!!!!! :D

Found my problem and thought I'd share it with those that are interested. I had cleaned/dielectric greased the two front sensors, and yet couldn't pull any codes...not even the 12 code. I dropped the inner kick panel on the passenger side under the dash, hoping to remove and clean the connector to the RH sensor, and I found that one pin in the connector between the "black box" for the system, and the main harness had pulled out slightly. I made sure it would stay in the plug then reconnected them, and was able to pull the codes, and eventually reset the light. It is so nice to not have to stare at that light all the time!

Thanks for that tip, I'm going to try that! How difficult is it to access that "black box" and are both the RH and LH connectors accessable from that kick panel? I've done the same fix with the frame only to get the light reset for a short time using the $20 tool from MidAmerica. It has to be something intermittent - nothing else makes sense.

Yes, the "black box" is easily accessable under the passenger lower dash panel. As I remember, the connectors for both the frame-mounter sensors connect into it, but it has been a while since I have done the work. I reset the system when I discovered the problem and the problem has not come back (fingers crossed).
