I was just outside looking at the Vette, and I noticed a metal piece over the manifold and a metal flexable pipe going from this. Any idea what this is and what it's for?
It's a carb pre-heat pipe. There should be a thermostatically controlled 'flap valve' in the air cleaner that closes when the engine is cold, so that the engine sucks in preheated air from around the exhaust manifold instead of sucking relatively cooler air through the snorkel.
It doesn't actually contribute to warming it up any faster - it pre-heats the intake air while the engine is cold so the fuel atomizes more thoroughly in the cold intake manifold for better cold driveability and reduced emissions until the intake manifold heats up. When the engine coolant warms up, a thermostatic vacuum switch opens, the vacuum valve in the air cleaner intake snorkel opens, and admits underhood air to the air cleaner intake instead of the pre-heated air from the "stove" shield around the exhaust manifold.
