Driver's Side Insulation, Carpet & Seat Are In

Now on to the other side. Got to remove the dash pad to run the wires for the electric door locks and access the wire on the heater box for the temp control door. I'm hoping I can fish it under and attach it without having to remove the duct work.

Bob, what are you using as an underlayment for your carpet.

Eddie,

Reflectix from Lowes. Sealing with Aluminum tape. I think the whole thing cost me less that $20. http://www.reflectixinc.com/product.asp

The Reflectix is very thin so it goes everywhere. Because it is foil based it holds its shape in corners, etc. so it makes it very easy to make your initial rough fittings and cuts.

The only problem I had was near the seat bolts where the combination of insulation, carpet and backing made it too thick for the original bolts. Just had to trim it back some.

I'm hoping to have a much cooler interior this Summer.

bobchad,

I brought back your post due to the fact that I am trying your Idea. How did your 77 come out? I needed new carpet and when I tore out the old my floor in my 77 was in real good shape and I just got the stuf at Lowes for my weekend project.

Did you have to spray 3m on the por-15 to get it to stay, or how did that work?

Bob,

I'll be doing my carpet install next week if it arrives as scheduled. I have a local Lowes so I'll run over and get some Reflectix, did you do the entire interior with it or just up front? Does this stuff come in a big roll? $20 beats what they want for all the interior heat barrier kits by a mile. I tried the link but it won't work here in the office.

Thanks!

scott 81,

I just bought the Reflectix insulation at lowes for around $17, the roll I got 16'' x 25', Bobchad will know better but I would think that that amount should cover my passenger side and the rear cargo area for sure, I might have to get more but I will see after tomorrow hopefully.

BORDERBUM- Thanks! I'll wait until Monday before I go buy some, that way you can tell me if one roll is enough, even so it's not that expensive if I had to buy 2 rolls. Still beats $100+ for the pre-cut stuff in catalogs.

I didn't find the stuff until after I had done my rear so I had used the regular insulation in the back.

One roll covered the whole front. Get the aluminum tape for the seams. At Lowes it was not with the insulation but over with the tapes and adhesives.

The stuff was easy to put down. It would hold its shape when you laid it in place and tokk it back out for trimming so that your cuts were fairly easy to make. I had a pair of tin snips, so I used that for the big cuts and a razor knive to trim.

Used the GM carpet adhesive to hold the stuff in place. I did not glue the carpet in though, relying on the contour of the carpet, the seats and the trim pieces for that.

Anything else, just ask. It was really easy to do once I got the guts out of the car.

This page has a couple more pictures. http://home.attbi.com/~jchadwick/interior.htm

I haven't had a chance to take her out but it has to have had an affect on the heat in the car.

scott81,

I got a late start and I probably wont make it to the back today, probably only the passenger side today because I was cleaning the area up for a bedlinner coating and i found my pass side seatbelt pully(bottom) frozen(rust) so i was trying to rig that, with no avail. Looks like another call to my parts man.

I put a truckbed type coating on the floor for extra insulation and am waiting for that to dry. I will finish the pass side for sure this weekend.

bobchad, I got the a flex type aluminum duct tape, It has a temp range up to 260 deg F. It was $13 and the others went to around 200 deg, but since i'm in hell (Laredo texas) I thought the extra money might be worth it. the others were around $7. Hope the extra money was worth it. Besides with the extra I will do my 72 when it is ready.

Bobchad, I know you said that the roll covered the whole front but how much did you have left? enough for the back?
Your pictures and info have been great, and also got me off my but to work on my car. THANKS
:beer :D

BORDERBUM,

It might have finished off the back, it just depends on how much of it you wanted to cover.

I didn't really have a heat problem back here so I wasn't really as diligent as I was in the front.

Bob

bobchad,

I might see If I can put it everywhere. I am Doing It a little slow today because of drying time. It is only 73 deg here so I am waiting.

Bobchad,

No, I used a truck bed liner type stuff, like 69MyWay, my floor was in real good condition, in fact the factory stuff looked yeal good, they(factory) just didn't put the stuff on the firewall, or the trans tunnel.

I finished the passenger side, and wow this stuff works, I used 3m adhiesive to hold it down, but for the most part the reflectex holds it's shape real well and I taped the seams like you said and I have had no problems. I did not get to the cargo area today but I did coat it real well with the bed liner stuff. It should be dry by tomorrow, so I can do the back.

how big was your roll? It seems like mine is going to cover the whole car, maybe thats why yours was near $11 and mine was $17, eather way It seems to be worth it's wait in gold. If this works as well as it seems we're going to be in good shape come summer!!

Where are you near in GA. I was there in the military (Hunter Army Air Force) in Savannah, and I spent some time in Ft. Polk near there also.
To me Ga is the most Beautiful Country I have ever been. I also spent quite a bit of time in Moultry (sp) near Valadosta (SP) I could have stayed there forever.

Good info guys, thanks. One last question on the reflectix, did you put the foil side up or down? Or are both sides foil? I finally got on their web site at home today, looks like pretty slick stuff.

Borderbum, I debated the truck liner stuff but decided I wanted the rust protection and the bed liner on top was overkill. Post some pics if you took some. I'm sure people would like to see the two options.

I live north of Atlanta. I came from California so while I like the warm weather, I could use a little less humidity.

Scott81, Both sides are foil with air bubbles in the middle.

I took the car out today and it seemed to work great. The test will be August. One thing I did notice with the new seats. I sit higher and may have a problem with the tops on. Another problem is that the wife says she can now see over the hood and wants to drive the car.

scott81,

Both sides are foil, goes in real well and holds it's shape good too. Get the aluminum tape for seems and you are in business!!!!

:L That can only mean trouble for you :D

Will do, thanks! First thing Monday it's done.

Bob, Looking great!

Now, you buy the steaks and materials, and come on down for a long weekend and we can glass that quarter panel back together and get you ready for a fresh sweet paint job.

Between your freaky cold a/c, fresh interior, tight suspension, and smooth running motor, you are going to have one of the best looking and driving sharks on the road.

Chris,

Thanks for the offer and the compliments. It's been a lot of work but its coming together.

I just happen to have a case of Omaha steaks in the freezer and that sounds like the perfect time to open them up.

Bob
