OK... This may be a real dumb question but....
I have a '93 LT1. I live in Michigan and have the car ready to store. The only issue is that there are plenty of great driving days left in this month. So, I had the insurance put back on the car and I am gonna drive it some more! I already did my end-of-season oil change, though. Can I just store it with the same oil after putting some more miles on the car? It's Mobil 1, so I figure I can put about 500-1000 miles on the car and still store it with the same oil. Any comments or suggesstions?

Thanks in advance

You would think it would be OK but I only put about 3 blocks on my fresh pre-storage change...

That's a how much is enough question. You already know the idealists answer :(

But back to the real world, make your last drive a moderately long highway trip where you get the oil up to operating temperature for 1/2 hour or so to drive out any moisture.

Snap Out of It

Gentlemen,

You're talking about synthetic oil - it's not going to breakdown, deteriorate, sour, or evaborate over the winter just because you drove the car before storing it. In most cases "storing" means putting the car in a garage for 3 - 4 months. That's not storing. Putting it away for a year or having it diplayed in a museum - that's storing. What's the atomic half life of sythetic oil - 250 years?

Put it away and change the oil next season - at the manufacturer's recommended milage interval. It will be fine.

Remo; I thought the concern had to do with the carbons and contaminates turning acidic and eating away at the crank bearings and such. For the money, I would just swap it out. Mine only had 1000K or so on the last oil change before I changed it again prior to storage.
Cheap peace of mind...

Randy,

I think that's more of an issue with dino oil than the synthetics. Living up here in New England you can imagine how much agonizing goes on around the storage deal. In the end most experts agree the synthetic oil has pretty much eliminated the concerns about the acids and the long term effects.

Any day now I will have to put mine up for the winter and deal with the withdrawal. Either that or we could all move to a warmer climate. But then I'm sure I'd miss the annual 200+ inches of snow in this area. Yea - right. ;LOL

Remo :cool (sunglasses to prevent snow blindness).

I use the Valvoline Max Life.
And it even stops the small oil leaks.
I'm happy.
