C4s are the best buy for the buck right now, but don't worry, the prices for the fourth generation will rise again, just as they did for each other generation. ;)

Yeah ken.....in about another 20 years !!

It is really ironic.

The C4 is still one of the most advanced cars on the road considering the volumes of aluminum, light weight composites, and endless wind tunnel design hours.

The C4 can cut the wind like a razor blade, turn corners like a pure race car, and accelerate with the best of the production cars.

With a little tweaking, a C4 can out-accelerate the best of the best, and still manage braking from 60-0 quicker than anything else out there, less a brand new Corvette.

The back bone of the car is the tried and true small block Chevy, and virtually every soft and wear item part can now be puchased aftermarket.

No mid 80-90 car compares in any way shape or form, yet...as you have mentioned they are dropping in value.

It is shocking to consider the window sticker of a 96 Vette at some 39,000 that can now be bought for $12K, and those like myself that have ultra clean refurbished older C4 models that sit for sale for months.

My best guess is that Insurance and the overall overwhelming popularity of the C5 have killed C4 values. You see, all though virtually any 21 year old could swing a $10-$15K loan to buy a good used C4, most can't get any reasonable insurance, so they pass and buy a Camaro, Mustang, Celica...etc, instead.

Will it turn around anytime soon? Who knows?

Funny that nobody has mentioned the Corvette Market Report!

Y'all have talked about Corvette Magazine often enough and how nice it is (too bad they don't have a web site or I'd provide a link. ;)), the September issue has an excellent article by Nick Pon, dealing with exactly this point: the fourth-generation Corvette is the most affordable of them all.
If you're looking to find the best bang for the buck, it's hard to beat a fourth-generation Corvette. These cars lack the collector-driven price inflation of the C1 and C2, they're more refined than the C3, and they're old enough now to be priced like everyday cars. And, just as C4s are caught between high collector values of earlier generations and the new car smell of the C5, the fourth-generation hardware is also a happy medium between old-school brawn and new-fangled refinement. This means you can get a solid, well-mannered performer for very modest entry and running costs.

The bottom line (to me) is that if you look at the car as an investment, it doesn't mean that much to you in the first place; it's just another trinket, or a pretty bauble. Any restorer will tell you that more goes into a vehicle than is ever recovered. ;)

Now that I've given a taste of what the magazine has to offer, you'll have to buy it to read the rest. :L

Chris, this part applies to your '90 I think...
Since we're looking at this generation's values, the used-car market as a whole has been depressed by the current economic downturn, and by a plethora of zero-interest new-car loan offers. Not surprisingly, C4s have softened up a bit along with the rest of the market.

_ken :v

P.S., Chris, good luck sellin' the '90. :upthumbs

I hear you, Ken. A guy passed up my restored '79, L-82 for an '89 because it was cheaper. I hope he is happy but the values are changing hands. The sharks are gaining.

Since my ol 92 is over 100k now, it's practically worthless to sell. Okay by me. It's going to be my 'project' car one of these days.
