Hello Everyone ;

I'm hoping to get help with a problem I have had for some time now. Any sugestions will be greatly appreciated.

Starting from the intitial problem. The car would miss and stumble while driving. This was intermittent. It finally threw a code #23 - Open or Grounded Mixture Control Solenoid. I replaced this solenoid. All was well until a short time later and this car stumbled again and even shut off. This time No Codes but the catalytic converter went bad. A friend said I could bypass this so I ran a straight pipe.

Things ran fine for a short time again. Then it started shutting off again. This time a code #42 - EST Circuit - I replaced the ignition module and the HEI coil. This worked for only a couple of days then it shut off and wouldn't start. (Cranked but no spark). I got off of work and removed the negative battery cable to reset the computer. When I hooked it back up the Car fired right up.

It has not set any codes even though it will shut off. It does this sometimes even when just ideling to warm up. ( I have noticed that I have to kick the choke off ? It doesn't seem to go off on it's own)

Awhile (the beginning) back I tried another computer but the problem was still there so I put the old computer back in.

I have replaced the Spark Plugs, Plug Wires, Cap, Rotor, Mixture Control Solenoid , Oxygen Sensor , HEI Coil and the Ignition Module.

This problem is intermittent and I don't have a clue to what is causing this. It doesn't set any codes and I would think it would when it shuts off.

I don't even like to drive it anymore as I don't know when it will let Me sit.
Thanks for ANY help...

Check all the grounds!! Make sure you have a good ground strap to the engine, and a good grounds to all your ECM connections.

If it dies on you again like this, I *would* suspect the ECM. No spark isn't right, unless something isn't connected. Double-check your wiring.

ECM Troubles

Thanks Ken73 ;

Today I tried to find any loose wires , etc. I took apart and cleaned all the connections also. Still shuts off.

Thanks for the suggestions though. I guess I will try the gound strap , etc. tomorrow. (7/3)..

I'm not real familar with some things on an car but I do read alot. Today I looked in the carb and when You give it some throttle it shoots gas in the carb. When I let off it stops. Should there be a fairly steady stream of fuel going into the carb?

Thanks Again;
Bob

The stream of gas is from the accelerator pump - it just adds a little extra gas to start the increase in rpms. The rest of the fuel comes from air passing across the venturies, the pressure decrease "sucks" some of the gas out and mixes it with the air just before it gets to the throttle plates.

Problem Solved

I finally took it to a shop to see if their scanner could pick something up.

It only found that the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor ) was low on its voltage.

I installed a new TPS and adjusted the voltage. What a job as the screw that adjusts the TPS on My 81 Rochester Carb is a Hex Head and I had nothing like it. (Special order I suppose.) Anyhow I made one out of a 16 penny nail using a Dremel Tool. (Worked fine).. :-)

While I was at it I double checked all the wires to and from the Distributor.

I drove it about 60 miles today and NO bobbles , etc.. What a relief. :-)

Back to driving in style :-)

Thanks Again for the suggestions.;
