EGR Pipe Heat Shield

The heat shield on my '86 is in pretty bad shape so I ordered a replacement from Corvette Central. The discription in the catalog says, "in the past, replacement of this heat shield was time consuming and dangerous." The replacement just wraps around the pipe and velcos in place. Should I remove the old one first? What is the danger?

Just FYI, I put one of those velcro replacement shields on my engine. The velcro lasted about 30 minutes before melting and creating a bunch of foul-smelling smoke. I wound up using a couple safety pins to hold the wrap in place until I removed the pipe altogether. I'd honestly recommend getting the real deal and pulling the pipe - it's not hard to remove; the most difficult bit is getting the temp sensor out - which you need to do anyway to put the velcro shield on.

I put one on my '87 a couple of months ago and it looks like new. No melting or anything. Worked great.

All you have to do to get it over the sensor is unplug the sensor and feed the pigtail through a hole you cut in the shield. The only hard part is getting to the plug to unplug the sensor as it's located behind the distributor.

Don't try doing this when the engine is hot.

I am still running mine with no shielding.... I guess I will put some header wrap around it or something before I go to Bowling Green...

As long as your plug wires are routed away from the pipe, there really shouldn't be a problem. I don't know of anything else close which would require the protection.

The velcro might not melt, but you can't reuse it, the heat destroys it.

That looks very difficult to do.

Yes, but it can be done. I had to unclip mine when I did the headers. I could not get it off the EGR tube with it still attached to the manifolds.
