I'm going in for emissions testing later this month and I'm changing out the EGR because it's the original. The plugs, wires and fuel filter were changed two years ago but I'm going to check them anyway.

When I finally pulled the old EGR off, there was a lot of carbon buildup on the valve at the bottom. I'm assuming that it isn't good anymore. I'm going to take it in for testing next week and see if it passes. I may also take the charcoal canister off and examine it to see if it is still functional.

The EGR bolts were a bear to get to. I did not take the runners off but I thought about it. I saw that I would need to take the valve covers off in order to take the lower runner bolts off and I didn't want to replace the valve cover gaskets because I'm going to 1.6 roller rockers in a few months. It was tough but I got them off and the new EGR on.

Buy a new one from Chevy, no aftermarket. The best 50-60 dollars you will ever spend for the piece of mind and knowing you will not have to go through removing it again.

Will be curious how the 1.6 roller rockers work out. Been wanting to do that for awhile.

Are the Chevy EGR's that much better than aftermarket?

Do not know but, after what it took to change mine I was not willing to take a chance.

Another consideration is the packaging on EGR valves from Autozone, etc. are marked "Made in China" the one from Chevrolet is marked "Made In America"!

Do you really think they can reverse engineer a precision part that well?

I changed mine at 85,000 miles and it was very clean. If your was pretty crusty (black crud) you must be running rich or burning oil. I changed mine as a matter of routine while changing injectors. Do not know what cured my miss/crappy running for sure but, it runs as smooth as silk now.

does a bad egr valve cause erattic idle. just a little bit of a miss now and then . and will it effect one cylinder more than others ? I have this intermitent miss-rough idle on my 90 , new plugs and wires, rotor and cap look clean and find no cracks.

What all is involved in changing out the EGR Valve?
How long did it take you?
thanks

Took the MAF and that tube off. Unbolted the runners, 7 torx bolts if I remember correctly. Unbolted the 4 bolts that attach the throttle body to the plenum. Two little rubber hoses on the passenger side of the plenum. unbolted a gas type bolt at the bottom of the plenum towards the rear. Unhooked some sensor on the bottom of the plenum. Unhooked the throttle body wires and the wire retaining bolt that is on the plenum. That's it, pretty straight forward and all the bolts are very distinct so no mixing them up. I also took off the distributor cover, 3 little torx screws.

I could probably do it in 10 minutes.

Changing the EGR itself is a different story. The two bolts are there there 3/8's size if I remember correctly. The one towards the front of the vehicle can be accessed going through the area by the drivers side plenum. The other bolt towards the rear of the vehicle is tricky. You will need this little tool that looks like a claw to gain access to that. It is also a 3/8's size. Use that little claw with a universal and an extension to get that rear bolt off.

I took the plenum off twice trying to change the EGR valve.
I couldn't figure it out.
The bolts are 3/8. Normally everything is metric.
Those bolts were smaller than 10MM and larger than 9MM.
Now that I know the size I'll try it again.
You are right, its not easy.
Alot harder than it looks.
