does anybody know where to get a egr solenoid relay? cant find it easily.

I looked forever. I do not think that it is available in the aftermarket. I got one from someone on the boards who was removing all the smog stuff off his 81.

that sucks. I need one.

What does it look like? I have one of the 2 solenoids that I think control the EGR but I could be wrong. If I take off the smog parts but keep the computer, I wont need it. It might not be pretty.....

Post a pic of what you need. :thumb

this thing. if you have it and are willing to part with it pm me a price and method of preferred payment. thanks.

Is it both valves or just one? IIRC I have the white but not the orange. Are they both for the EGR?

they are both bad. im gonna try to repair them again. they were repaired years ago. the nozzles are broken off and glued back on but not working right.

Why do you need one? If it is to make sure the EGR works correctly, you can use manifold vacuum like was used on all pre-ECM cars. Redirect the manifold vacuum that goes to the relay directly to the EGR. The car will run fine and the computer will not know the difference

If it is for originality -- only the true enthusiast would ever notice the vacuum hoses are going to the wrong place.

With all that said, I hunted for two years to find mine so that I could put it back to original :ugh

Carlisle is coming up in Aug. A great place to find such things. If you cant get there, I could look for you.

The solenoid aids to shut off EGR during WOT...

hello Gerry so are you saying that it will not operate correctly if routed around the celinoids? I haven't tried it yet. what would be the downside of doing this?

The solenoids are there to "time" when the EGR valve is in operation. As you know, EGR valves operate in vacuum signal. And the valve itself allows exhaust to remix mix with fuel-air mixture to more completely burn the gases produced during the combustion cycle of the engine. The down side is, than when it is in operation, you lose signal from engine which translates to power.

What the L81 system allows to do is to target engine regimes in which fluorocarbons are more easily produced in exchange to cancel flourocarbons burning when you most need the engine to be at its strongest (like WOT and uphill loads). The computer allows vacuum signal to the EGR valve during crusing speeds, idling, and deceleration (i have to go in the book to remember if these are all the regimes).

So, EGR valve operation is more efficient with the solenoid connected to the engine vacuum signal and letting the computer decide when to apply vacuum.

Bypassing the solenoids with allow operation of the EGR in all regimes of engine operation cycle. Not very efficient. The only way to improve efficjentcy would to block vacuum signal all together. This would provide the same result as a blank-off plate would (the plate in place of the EGR valve itself).

Hope it is not as clears as mud. lol
