Within the next month or so i need to have my '76 pass the IL emissions test. What I am concerned about is my missing EGR valve. I'm not sure why it is gone but when i had my car checked over after purchase the written report showed that it was missing - no big deal....Until now! I have a quote for $150 do get this done w/ some other stuff. The question is - how vital is this to me passing the test? Will it be an automatic fail without this EGR valve?? Thanks for you help!!!! :)

It sits right up on top of the engine, highly visible. It would be difficult for it to be missed during a visual inspection.

I thought I saw something recently about the valve costing somewhere under $20. Your probably missing everything else necessary to hook it into the carb as well.

I paid $100 for the GM correct EGR valve. However, you can buy a replacement generic type for use on emissions inspections--then take it back off--they're junk.

Thanks for the quick replys Bobchad & photovette - but i need to know how vital this is to me passing my emissions test. Fingers Crossed!! :Steer

I suspect you won't pass the visual. You probably wouldn't in California. You might in Georgia.

Depends on how tough the inspection is and how knowledgable the inspector is.

As far as i know the only thing i have to pass is a standing Idle test. No under the hood checking. They test the gas cap for its ability to hold vapors and then put a sensor in the exhaust/rear. I'm 90% sure this is what they do. I just had my cavalier tested yesterday.

That certainly would be good news. Good luck.

Thanks!! I hope to get some responses from those who have had emissions tests on their Vette(s).

Anyone? Anyone? Hello!? Am i the only person who gets emissions tests!?
i see you! Come out and talk! ;help

well if the test is not like the IM 240 test wich is done here in the greater Milwaukee area you might be in luck. basicalythe EGR valve dumps a metered amount of exhaust gas back into the engine to reburn. Why would they do that you ask? Two reasons,1 the exhaust gasses delute the incomming fuel mixture wich in effect leans it out ,and #2 the main thing a EGR does is lower NOX wich nitrogen oxide wich is formed when cumbustion chamber temps hit about 1300 + deg.Now before you get upset NOX can be controlled by fattning up the idle mixture or other ways but you have to be carefull here as you dont raise the hydrocarbons wich are read in parts per million.I think your car should be around 220 to 350 ppm not sure on that.but getting back to the EGR deal egr valves on 73 engines only were hooked up too ported vac on the carb so the egr valve would work only above idle, reason for that is if EGR is introduced to the mixture at idle thecar would stall or be very hard to keep running.any way hooking yours up to a ported vac signal would suffice long enough to get you through the test.If you wanted to hook it up the way it was done on your 79 you would need the proper thermostat housing that would have the proper thermo vacume switch in it.The thermo switch closed when it reached the temp it was calibrated at useally around 200 deg so the EGR or vac controlled device would receive vac after the engine had time to reach operating temp.Sorry about this being so long but if there is anything else ask away.

Thanks Black 81 Vette. Great information from your post. I'm going to give my mechanic a call monday morning to see what the next course of action is. If i don't need it, i'll pass - if i do, i'll pay (dearly) to have it reinstalled. Thanks for your help.

I went through a similar situation when registering mine. I knew a guy, who knew a guy, who knew where to take it to get a 'passing' test. Of course it cost a litte more, cash only, but it got the job done! We don't need no stinking catalytic converters!

We are starting emissions testing here in NY in Sept..

My inspector told me that they are only checking 1996 and newer vehicles. Anybody else heard about this?
I am surprised that this is the case, but glad.

If there is no visual inspection and if there is only an idle sniffer test, the absence of the EGR will not affect emissions. The EGR goes to ported vacuum and never opens at idle. It is only above idle that it opens, because of the ported vacuum. Good luck. Let us know how you come out!!

Thanks Ron,

I'm in Florida on vacation right now and haven't gotten a chance to take it in for emissions. It'll be a few weeks until i get it in to have it checked out. Thanks for your help and everyone else who as posted. It just goes to show how great this website is. I'll keep everyone posted of the progress.
