I did replace it not to long ago, however for what ever reason the current valve is (not) holding any vacuum.

I wonder if the valve not functioning properly could aid in the slight ping I've been having?

Question...
instead of spending another $60.00 on a valve that (may) only last a short time...again, and since my car never gets an emission test, can I just do away with this thing, use a block-off plate of some sort and simply block the vacuum line running to it?
thanks for any feedback.:cool

You can block off the line and leave it there, that way it looks original but it won't do anything. The may be from the extra air being pulled into the carb from your diaphragm leaking. Try just blocking the line and see if the ping goes away.

I pulled the egr valve, and all the AIR junk that goes with it, off my 82. What a difference. Had to re adjust the timing and it runs like a charm. Give it a try.

Just my opinion.

Thanks for the feedback fellas, I've owned this 81 since new, Nice little car, not much power but they do have great lines and handle good. Since the EGR (is) leaking, guess I'll just find a block-off plate and plug the line that was going to it.

PS. it is a damn shame the engine bay is covered with vacuum hoses and switches all over the place...Real Rat's nest :eyerole

:L Yeah! Your 81 is stripped down engine compared to the 82 when it comes to tubes and wires. No sympathy here man.;)

Hmmm, ya got me thinking here (smell wood burning?)...anyhow I know your Vette is EFI and has much more junk under tha hood. So how come the computer didn't toss up a check engine light?

Nothing would make me happier than to remove ALL that crap...but I thought the computer would be looking fo all that info...no?

All the computer does is monitor sensor inputs and feedback outputs and verify that the sensors are there and working, and modify the timing, fuel mixture to operate within a certain set of parameters in the lookup tables.
As long as the feedback is within those parameters, there will be no codes and the computer will adjust accordingly.

Pete, if all the sensors, air pump and miles of vacuum hoese etc are removed then how would the computer recieve the needed info to make the adjustments?
Can and have I done a complete long block rebuild...yep, several times diesels also. But all those vacuum switches and cluter give me the shivers.:ugh
Thanks for the feedback.

All that would be necessary to dump the computer is to convert the Carb and distributor to vacuum operated, non-computer models. All the emmisions could be pulled off.
Alternatively, you could still block the EGR and pull the AIR pump and lines off and leave everything else alone without causing any problems.

Actually several years ago I did purchase a non computer Q-Jet in hopes of doing this project. Hmmmm, wonder if I still have that carb laying around?
