Electric vs. mechanical fuel pump.

I currently have a Holley "blue" electric fuel pump mounted in the rear right below the gas tank. There is no fuel pressure regulator inline. This setup has been running the car for about 15 years. I assume it has been working okay buy I have only had the car for a year. The engine is a 454 with a Holley Street Avenger 670 that requires only 5-6psi. I have it all apart (just replaced the gas tank and sending unit) and am unable to check to see what "real" pressure is being supplied by the pump.

Questions:

Is there any reason to keep the electric pump? If I need to shell out the $$ for a fuel pressure regulator why not just go back to a mechanical pump?

If I keep the electric pump, can I mount the regulator directly after the pump? I would like to not mount it near the carburetor.

Thanks!

Modern mechanical fuel pumps are reliable, readily available anywhere, don't require a regulator, support up to 500hp with no problems, and the only part of the fuel system under pressure is the line from the pump to the carb. :)

I guess my question if it works why fix it.. If the electric pump has been working why replace it? Do you have any fuel related issues? I'm surprised that VNV hasn't chimed in yet.. Hey Mark you out there??? What pump is that you are using now to feed that monster 502?????

Just on a side note.. 670 cfm Street Avenger.. You can probably pick up a few extra horses going to a bigger better carb..... I know not asked for but hey... HP is HP... right?? Dave..
