Electronic Column Lock

Moxie has the dreaded Electronic Column Lock problem. I read the recall bulletin and it says:

VEHICLES INVOLVED

Involved are certain 1998-2000 Corvette model vehicles built within these VIN breakpoints:

YEAR - DIVISION - MODEL - PLANT - FROM - THROUGH
1998 - Chevrolet - Corvette - Bowling Green - W5123355 - W5131069
1999 - Chevrolet - Corvette - Bowling Green - X5100001 - X5133283
2000 - Chevrolet - Corvette - Bowling Green - Y5100001 - Y5116233

My car is a 98 and the s/n is W511xxxx. Will I still be covered under the recall? If service follows the number listed above, I will not be covered under the recall but it seems the many have covered by the recall. How closely will service honor these break points be looked at? I am taking the car to club sponsered dealership. May that will help.

Need help quickly. The car is going in for service tomorrow.

Hi there,
Your car is not within the vehicle break points for the column lock recall.
However, I have done installs for people whom want to eliminate the lock.
Using the information in this recall, you can safely disable the lock, if you want to, WITHOUT causing problems with the BCM.
I would ask them if they would do this for you.
It will take about 2 hours to do.

c4c5, my car is a 99 vin X5124565, and I have not had a problem.
Do I need to take it to the dealer for a recall? What do I need to do? What is the problem?
Herbie

HI Herbie,
Well, I would have it done. If for no other reason, that the recall expires in the 03 model year, and should be performed.
Problems are wideranging, so talking about what actually fails would NOT be fair here.
Many differing conditions happen.
I would just have the recall done.

c4c5, ok will take your advice as always. Is there a recall number or TBA number that I should use?
Herbie

When you go in for service, they will run your VIN, and see that the recall is active, and perform the repair.
Just ask them to check for 01044a.
This is the recall number.

c4c5, you are the MAN! THanks....will follow up the post after work completed...

My 98 had the steering lockup problem and my VIN was out of the range of VINs covered by the recall. After I had the repair made (at my expense), I complained to my local Chevy dealer and to Chevrolet in Detroit. I was reimbursed for all expenses.

Rons98, sorry to hear about that. My car is in range so I better take it in. Glad you got your $$$$ back from GM. They usually will listen if you holler loud enough. (unfortunately)...what happened to your car? Where you driving it when it happened?
Herbie

The first lockup was while I was parked at work. After waiting a few minutes I tried it again and it unlocked and I was able to drive home. I was getting worried about this time, so I made sure that I parked in my garage VERY STRAIGHT so it could be moved out with the steering locked, if need be. Well, the next time I started the car, it was locked up and wouldn't free itself, so I had to call for a flatbed tow truck. Since I was at home, parked in straight, it wasn't too bad other than the hastle.

Thanks for the info. I have my appointment set with the dealer for next week, whatever it is they have to fix it. I also have the GM extended warranty so just in case. This is the reason why I constantly monitor these forums, cause Vette owners stay on top of it. THanks! Have a great 4th....

Column not locked?

I need help! I am getting the COLUMN LOCK message with the
Remove key- 10 seconds and if I move the car it dies.
With the key in , the column is not locked. I can turn the wheel all I want. It locks with the key out.
I guess the computer thinks its locked. I have tried removing
fuse 25 and 29 with no success. I have tried bumping the wheel.
I can't beleave there is not a way I can release this long enough
to get it to a dealer.
Thanks for ANY help

Call a tow truck. That was the only way I could get mine to the Chevy dealer. Best with a flat bed or with all four wheels on a dolly. Good luck. My 98 was not in the recall range but my dealer fixed the problem at no cost to me.

I finally got it to go!!!! A few more wiggles on the steering wheel
They ONLY thing I did was turn the radio off. I dought that had
anything to do with it but it may be worth a mention.
Its at the dealer now. If you have a 97 thru 2000, its not IF
it's when ( and where) get it in NOW.
