I have the car up on stands with the drive shaft out. Is adjusting the emergency brake simply a matter of tightening the pull on the cable that is right there near the rear of the transmission?

That's the final part of the adjustment. The first and most important part is adjusting the shoes inside the rotor. Take your wheels off and you'll see a small access hole on the rotor. Turn it to BDC and inside is the star wheel adjuster. use a flat bladed screw driver and adjust a few clicks at a time until you have slight drag, just like on any car with drum brakes.

After that's done you can snug up the cable.

Thanks. Once I get the drive train back in, I'll be taking the wheels off to replace the rear spring with a composite and will do it then.

Looks like the brake tool in my tool box that I used on my 65 VW will once again find some use. And to think I was just thinking of pitching it as an antique.
