I've heard more and more areas across the country are able to forgo emissions testing with some sort of classic and historical plates. In Arizona, emissions testing is required for all vehicles 67 and older. I have searched high and low and can't find any confirmation from our local DMV about this but I keep hearing rumors it is true. Has anyone been able to get these plates and get around emissions testing? Does anyone live in Arizona that is doing this?

Its funny, I am an environmentalist and actually want to make sure 99.5% of our vehicles pass. However, there are a couple that just won't and are driven rarely.

Sorry - In Texas they require only 24 year old autos and newer to be tested.

Arizona sucks!

There is no way around emissions in AZ. They are @#$%^!!! If the car came origonally with catalyst converters and a air/smog system, thats what you have to have and working properly. The bad part is the AZ MVD doesnt know what came with certain year cars and bs their way i nto saying your car needs both. Federal Law blah blah blah. Forget it!

Even if you actually have antique plates on the vehicle? I am from IL, and yes, cars from the 60's still have to take the emissions tests UNLESS they have antique license plates on them. Antique license plates are 5 year plates.

:( You dont even get exempt for being under 5000 miles ? PA does that..

I would like to get AZ's "historic plates", their version of antique plates. Doesn't do any good though, no exemptions. AZ is one of the only few states left that you have to be tested for emissions with any car 35 years or younger. Past few years, ppl have been trying to get them to pass a bill to change it to a rolling 25, but it's been years and still nothing! My vette will pass the emissions test, but since they say all '76 vettes had the air/smog system, they will flunk it! Quoted to me atleast 10 times was "It's a federal law to have removed that from your vette." Too bad my vette never had it to be removed.
