New here. I have recently purchased an LT4 engine with all accessories and computer from a totalled 1996 Corvette Collector Edition with 24000 miles. The engine had been stored inside for 9 months and I plan to bring it back to life in 3 months by installing it into a newer S10. (I hope you-all don't consider this to be "sac-religious"......I know how Corvette owners can get....I use to own a 58, 62, and 65 many moons ago)....Anyhow; I have some questions as to preventive measures I can do to preserve it's internals, etc. I have drained the oil and removed the filter.
1) I assume my next move is to fill an oil filter with Mobile One oil, install it, and add oil to fill line on dipstick....right?
2) Should I remove the spark plugs and hand-turn over the engine a few times?
3) Should I squirt any oil into cylinders before I hand-turn over?
4) I will change T stat to 180....this way I know the old one won't "stick" closed.....Do you think the Water Pump will be OK?
5) Anything else?
thanks

Ok...since no body.......... wants to pick up the potato.....let me chime in .....if I might............This is what I would do: Follow the standard long term layup procedures that apply to a mercuiser.........and when you do............ apply w/ your particular climate in mind..............Austin, eh?? Who you hiding from?? Fill the crank and use fogging awl............at least it'll run down the walls...............just pull the stat and stick a rag in er.....:( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

Just me but with it sitting that long I would reprime it good before trying to start it. This will involve removing the intake & using a drill to turn the oil pump. It sounds worse than it is. Better safe than sorry. Mine was down for 6 months while I worked the heads & all. I primed mine for an hour or so. I set the drill up to run by itself so I could turn the crank every so often while it was priming.

So, Neal.....never had one of these engines open,,,,the older small blocks; you could just remove the dist. and thru that hole one could do the long slotted rod-on-a-drill to prime. Are you saying , due to Opti-spark, I must remove the intake to gain access to the oil pump ? Will the pump have the same slot as in older engines and that I should use clockwise revolution to prime?
........and while I'm at it, would it behoove me to install new valve seals?

Yep! That's exactly what I am saying. The shaft & all is there just no distrbutor hole in the intake. There will be a piece of nylon bolted down on the shaft. Just remove it, stuff a oil pump driver down in the hole, line it up with the pump & spin away! Yes once inside it is the same as in other 350. Make sure to put the cover/ holder back on the shaft hole before putting the intake back on.

Something Else to thnk about. Did you take the CCM as well as the PCM? It is my belief, and I can not confirm this at this moment, but hope to sometime this week, that the programming in the PCM for the corvette will be looking for the CCM for things such as VATS. I have put an LT-4 in an older Corvette and can only make it run for 15 seconds tops before the fuel injectors shut off and the motor dies. I believe it is looking for the VATS even though they have been programmed out. My understanding is that on the Vette the CCM sends that VATS signal to the PCM.

I have also been told that if you flash the PCM with an F-Body flashing, you can take out the VATS and not have the same problem. I am awaiting an F-Body Flashing so I can try this.

The Motor sat for close to 3 years between runs, but has started and run strong and on all 8 for the time it runs. I also got rid of CATS as the car it went in didnt have to pass emmisiions.

Good Luck

As far as the computer and wiring and programming; I am planning to have a place in Fla do the work. They specialize in the installation of LT1s or LT4s into S10s. Thanks
