Engine Cleaning Question

I just purchased a 98 that has 35,000 miles on it. I've just started cleaning the engine compartment. When I pulled off the dust covers over the coil packs on top of the valve covers, I notices a slight amount of oil resdue & sand (dust & dirt collection). I've read that one must be careful not to get the omni spark (sp) wet. How can I clean these areas? Can I wash down the engine the same as I do on my 64 roadster, being careful not to get water on the distributer & in the carb?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

HI there,
You have coil near plug ignition, on the c5.
This is not half as sensitive as the Optispark of the c4 body style.
You can spray it down with water from a garden hose, and a little degreaser, and let it sit a few min.
Hose it off, and you should be fine.
One word of caution, do NOT get the Alternator wet. Simply put a plastic bag over it.
