Out of curiosity: How did GM/Chevy come up with naming the engines L-83 (in my case), or LS-1 etc etc? Anyone know ?

All Chevrolet engine options carried the "L" prefix, except those that were tied directly to a special package that included the engine (Z-28, ZL-1, ZR-1, ZR-2, etc.); what followed the "L" prefix was selected by the Engineering Releasing group so it didn't conflict with what had been released previously.

If only that were "still" true. For example, we'd think of a LS-6 as a 1971 big block, and a LT-1 as a 1970-72 small block. ;)
