matts 75

Guest
I've developed a miss the last day or so. I have a 350 L48 with automatic. It starts ok and seems to idle ok but when I accelerate it is sluggish up until it shifts out. It seems to get worse as the car gets hot. I changed the cap and rotor and it didn't help. I checked the plugs that were easy to get to and they seem to be clean. Should I go ahead and change them and replace the wires or is there something else I should check first?

try changing plugs. if they are hairlined cracked on the insulators, then when under rich conditions, acceleration and/or load, they miss fire. the plugs will fire from the insulator to the inside of the thread section and cause symtoms like what you are describing. plugs are cheap, run some plain jane autolites. they are very inexpensive and will work great in your car, you won't be able to tell the difference from them or splitfires. your wires are probably good. i have a 75 too and a 93. dont know what kind of carb you have, if you have a holley it could be dirt in the jets too. or it could be a burnt plug wire too.

thanks for the help. I was thinking to change both plugs and wires but just wanted a second opinon. I hope it does the trick.

Plug wires are the most overlooked item in any tune up. However, they deteriorate with age and can cause exactly what is happening to you. For 50 bucks or so, it's good insurance.

Engine miss

Happened to my 72 Coupe awhile back. Replaced the wires, plugs, cap etc. Was fine for a while and miss came back. Finally, I took it to a shop and they detected a crack in bottom seam of the right exaust manifold which caused hot exaust to flow directly on the wires thereby cooking them quickly. Replaced the manifold and the sled has been running great ever since.
