Okay, maybe it's me, my eyesight getting worse..
Maybe you can help: I am trying to get all the numbers together on my car, just for fun (and seeing so many of you doing it for documentation). I've read all the books i have, read through most of the previous posts here, tried almost all angles on the engine, but i cant seem to find the stamp/VIN on my engine block. :confused
I checked the optional one (above the oil filter), but there doesnt seem to be one (Guess, that WAS optional :) ). But on the passenger side, in front of the header with the logo, i cant seem to get into that. Do i have to remove some parts? I attempted the Air Gen today, until i stopped when there was fluid leaking :eek Only small amounts, but i didnt realize the large flange was apparently holding some of the water pump together.. I'm apparently just a PC Techie. :(
Though i am finding lots of other interesting stuff, like my engine block is blue (is that correct for a 82 L-83?). Also i found a VIN stamped into the frame, right behind the passenger side front wheel.. Didnt know that one...

My doorframe/A-Frame plate has the following:
C 06A 115991
591 59L 59U E
Chevrolet

The 115991 is the last 6 of my VIN, so i know i am getting more towards numbers matching and all but i still would like to find the engine stamp..
The only other numbers i found were on the Rochester's (17082053 & 52 resp.) and next to the Distributor Cap, on top of the Manifold Cover is this: 14031371, if that means anything.. Oh, and when i thought i had found it first, there is a stamp with the firing sequence on the block.. Interesting..
Maybe i should not be doing this with the engine in the car on the ground ?
If you guys could describe to me what i need to do (in the no-tech version), maybe that'll help

Thanks Guys/Gals !!
Stefan :w

Stefan,

With all of the stuff under the hood of an 82 you have two choices to read your stamp pad. First is to remove a whole load of stuff:(. Second is to get some wax paper or some of the ethching type paper that is used to do tombstone rubbings. Squeeze into position and rub the pad with the end of a tool.

Maybe someone else has a better trick. Good Luck!

Eric,
i was thinking on that, rather then removing all sorts of parts. With my luck, i might have some "leftovers"... :eek
But: I cant seem to figure out where that pad IS. I cant even find it with flashlighting all sorts of spaces. I know it's supposed to be passenger side, in front of the head, right under where the header meets the block, but i cant even get into that space..
When i had the Air Gen partially dismembered, i was able to slide it towards the drivers side, but there seems to be much more pipe'age that 'lays' on top of that pad.. Dunno.. :(

I may not be following here but the pad is not "under where the header meets the block". It is in front of the passanger side valve cover. Just a short extension of the block that the numbers are stamped on. Would be on around the corner from the headers. Could be covered up by the A/C compressor and/or the brackets.

# 4 is the location you are looking for in front of the passanger side head.

tom...

Yep, Tom, thats where i tried looking (maybe i am using the wrong lingo here.. If it's not GB, RAM or such i am likly to get lost ;) )... I think there is just too much stuff bolted on, and i am withholding my quest for pad's until i'll restore at least the engine compartment (20+ years of Bubba did a lot of "snipping") to a little bit cleaner.. Thanks for the input Guys..

I looked for the stamp pad numbers on my 76 and the stamp pad looks different than the diagram above or photos I have seen. It looks square instead of rectanglular and could only see one set of numbers : 22513
I will take a closer look this weekend. I don't really mind if it is not the original engine, I am just happy to own a C3 Vette:beer:

I also have an 82. My 82 Shop manual shows the optional one by the Oil filter BUT it also shows one on the block infront of the passengerside head beside the water pump.

It maybe concealed by either the A/C or smog pump.

It certainly is concealed JDP. The pad must be under that AC/Smog Pump, but i dont want to take the car apart, YET.. ;)
When i attempted, it started leaking water from the front, obviously, so i buttoned it back up. Time is the issue more then laziness. And i am happy i have a 82CE, no matter what the engine (replacement or not). It was just one of those curious, nothing to do on a sunday quests.. Those days have been over with since 9/13, now it's diaper time over playtime for daddy.. :D
Thanks for the info though, i just wanted to figure out whether the engine i got in there is the original or a replacement.. One of them days, maybe when she is older, we'll pull the engine together..
:w
Stefan

PS: Couldnt get under the car well enough to confirm the on next to the Oil Filter, and i didnt see anything with my head stuck in there..
