Engine Stand

Any recommendations for an engine stand? My 327 block arrives this week. Over the next several months, I'll be assembling the complete engine. What has worked well and what has not. I'd like to keep it under $125 if possible. Thanks -- Bill

My opinion: I bought a $35.00 4 wheel engine stand on sale at Auto Zone a couple of years ago now. It worked well and the quality was decent. I rebuilt my motor on it no problems. My brother in law just used it to rebuild his 327, no problem. I don't know the brand but it is a solid balanced stand and still in great shape. I guess my point is you don't need an expensive stand to do a good job.

Did it allow you to rotate the engine 360 degrees? Did it come with all necessary hardware for mounting the 327?

I think I paid $50 for one from Harbor Freight - It supports 800 pounds or so and spins 360 degrees. Mounting hardware consists of 4 grade 8 bolts and some hardened washers - got them from the hardware store.

Don't forget a plastic drip tray that sits on the legs of the stand, just off the floor; it will catch and contain all the miscellaneous drippings so you're not walking in them and tracking them all over the place.

Edit: Here's a photo of mine - it's molded, fits right over the center support leg.

I ahve 3 engine stands. I didn't pay more than $50 for any of them. Got a big block Chevy on one and small blocks on the others. The 4 whell is generaly a littl emore sturdy but I haven't broke any of them yet. They are all universal engine mountable, but you will need to buy the 4 bolts to thread into the block. Chevy is 3/8" coarse thread. Depending on the stand you buy somewhere between 2" - 3" will work. The drip pan is worth it's weight in gold!

Did it allow you to rotate the engine 360 degrees? Did it come with all necessary hardware for mounting the 327?

If I remember correctly I think I had to buy 4 grade 8 bolts but that was it. It rotated 360º.
