I originally posted a thread on a ticking noise on my y2k coupe, this was barely noticeable. I thought it was a lazy lifter or a fuel noisy injector, it was minor but irritating. Since then I had driven about 10k m., when on a trip around the block the noise got much louder and constant. I was sure it was in the valve train now. Not knowing what to do I spoke with the vette guy ay the local chevy dealer. After talking to him I decided to look into it myself, and after removing the valve cover I saw nothing obvious. I then looked closer and noticed the rear most pushrod hole in the head to be oblong while the others were round. When I loosened the rocker arm I found the pushrod to be broken in two and bent. Again I spoke to the vette guy and he was not too encouraging. I then bought a new rocker arm and pushrod, then I drained and replaced the mobil-1 and changed the parts. Good news is the engine seems to be fine, the bad news is that the ticking is still there ever so lightly. Note! I bought this car used with 4k m. and I have NEVER over reved the motor or missed a shift, so now what???:confused

Maybe you've got another bent push rod somewhere!! Mine has a little rattle in it cold, but after it warms up it's OK!!Been there since New!!:upthumbs

HI there,
Someone must have overrevved the motor on a DOWNSHIFT, BENDING THE PUSHROD.
This is common when you miss a downshift.
Another key is to use a TEch2 and monitor your misfires, as you may see them accrue on a few cylinders.
This will tell you if any valves were bent when the condition occured.
Once a pushrod takes a hit, it is weakened and will continue to weaken with cycles.
Allthebest, c4c5

Thanks, for the input, will do. Also was told that it is probable that when one pushrod has bent, others maybe bent as well. I may replace them all or at least check them. As I said I bought this car from an individual, only he knows if he misses a shift.

engine noise

Hi, I have a y2k coupe and it also has a slight ticking noise when its cold. After it warms up it goes away. Dealer said it happens with most 2000 cars or ls1 cars. I am the second owner and the original owner said it did it when it was new. He was quite bothered by it and the response he received was unsatisfactory for him so he sold it to me. The car is excellent compression and only has 34000 miles. its an auto so overreving not a problem. ed ramosl

I'm not a big fan of the stock pushrods at all. The only thing I would personally do is maybe think about replacing the stock pushrods with a 7.4" chromemoly pushrod from COMP. Model # 7955-16. The price should be around $125.00. This will ensure that any visit near the rev. limiter will be safe without the risk of bending or breaking a pushrod. The weaker links would be the valvesprings and lifters for sure, so I would take a look at the car's mileage and make a decision from there. A COMP model # 26918 beehive valvespring and titanium retainers and superlocks could replace the stock valvesprings. Any more work and you'll be into a new cam. ;)
