I have a 92 Corvette. I wish to know what is the best diagnostic scanner, programmer, and program to buy. What is the best or favorite in each category for? I wish to edit my chip. I want to turn the cooling fans on earlier and replace the thermostat with a 160 to 180. I also would like to add an oil cooler. I believe if I do these things I can use regular motor oil.

Here is What I use and like..

Scanner: Ease Diagnostics www.obd2.com

Prom Editor: Tunercat www.tunercat.com

PROM Programmer: Pocket Programmer 2 www.xtronics.com

Also you will need a UV eraser available at Xtronics.

There are other programs and burners, but I like what I have

Thanks Jeff. Have you ever thought of trying to run regular motor oil? If I do these things, will it hurt my motor? Also how have you modified your chip?

I am currently running regular motor oil and I have removed my Oil Cooler.

As for my Prom changes, I have changed the Timing, fan turn on Temps and Fuel tables. I also changed the fuel cutoff and Disabled the EGR

If I disable my EGR, can I take the cats or precats off the car? Also what temp did you program your fans to come on and do you know the fuel table for a 92 Vette? If so what changes would you make to the fuel table?

Actually, ive recently looked into the eprom programming. From what i understand youd be better of using flash proms as you wont need the UV eraser.

I havent actually done any of this stuff yet though. There is a really nice article on chip burning at thirdgen.org. I know, these are vettes, but gm is gm sometimes.

Either way i think its a good read for an intro to chip burning.

thirdgen.org is a great resource for other things also

Is your car stock? If so I would not touch the fuel tables.

Thirdgen.org is a great place for tuning info. I have had not EGR with and With out Cats. so it should not be a problem. As for Fan temp I think I have them at 180 or 185, I will have to duble check my PROM.

When I change my fuel Table I use scanned data to get the BLMs to 128 +-4

Jeff,

Was an oil cooler already on your car or was this something you added and then removed? Also what does BLM stand for?

Oil cooler was stock on the 89, it fed Antifreeze fromt eh Heater core line and in the block to a sandwich adapter at the filter.

I removed it and the temp did not change much.

BLM stands for Block Learn Multiplier

Does my 92 have an oil cooler? I guess I will have to learn about BLMs also, since I'm curious as to what they are for and what they do. If you have time please explain BLMs.

I don't think the 92 has an oil cooler.

As for BLM.. basically the magic number for this is 128 any thing below or above it the ECM is adding or removing fuel. There are Boundaries of 108 and 160. The BLM is the long term fuel and the Integrator is Short term. Same basic thing 128 is the magic # and 108 and 160 are the boundaries.

Depending on when the BLM is for a given RPM and MAP value will be where you would adjust the BLM if it is not at 128.

I need to search for the formula to determine the fuel adjustment, but I have it somewhere.

With a BLM of 128 + or - 4 sounds like you have a tight tolerance. Being a former Boeing Aircraft Machinist I should know. See if you can find the formula. I am keeping notes on all of this in MS Word. This way I will always have it if I need it. I wonder what my BLM should be and what it actually is? I'm really curious now.

I will look for the formula..

Your BLM Should also be 128..

That is the GM standard for our cars.

Did you find the formula yet? Anyway, I have another question. What type of spark plug wires are you using and where did you buy them from?

here is the Formula explained:

Let’s assume at 1000RPMs and 50kPa the stock VE value is 69. Lets also assume that Diacom is showing a BLM value of 108 for the same RPM and kPa. BLMs less than 128 indicate that the car is running rich and the ECM has had to decrease the injector pulse width to compensate. 108/128 = 0.844. We take the stock VE value of 69 and multiply by 0.844 to get 58.2. Change the VE table value from 69 to 58.2.

I use Ordinary AC Delco Plugs (non-rapidfire) and MSD Super Conductor wires
