Finally got a chance to remove the old manifolds , my question is ....are the heat shields necessary to go back on ? My wires are run well away from the manifolds ,so to open up the compartment a bit ,I'm thinking of leaving the shields off ...
Headers dont use the shields so ...

I await you responses before I install the new ones

Thanks,
Neal

I used '81s on my truck without heat shields. I also welded up the smog tube holes. To prevent the plug wire boots from getting burnt I used the metal heat shields that bolt to the block that you use with iron manifolds. Here's a couple of pictures.

Thanks

Tom, Thanks for the reply , tubes on new manifolds have been cut / welded / sanded smooth ...looks like no problems without shields then !
PS wish my engine looked half as clean as yours does !!:beer

I still have mine on...
I took them off and cleaned them up and put them back on....

sweet looking engine Tom!!!!!

We be talking about the sheet metal shields that go over the spark plugs?

I thought he was referring to the shields that go around the manifold....

Thanks. They stay clean if you never start them. :L

We are talking about the heat shields that go around the manifolds. I added the plug shields after the manifold shields were removed. They fit just like they did on the iron manifolds.
