I'm replacing the rear y-pipe and mufflers on my 85' After removing the old y-pipe, I noticed that there are no gaskets on either side of the cat and there was obvious blow by on the flange, both front and rear. Are there suppose to be gaskets on either side of the Cat? The four bolts attaching the front and rear pipes were tight, but there still is obvious soot that made it out and I could feel a small amount of exhaust and heat prior to removing the pipes! If there aren't suppoe to be gaskets, is there any type of heat resistant sealant I can apply? For the last several years, it seemed that the interior ceter floorboard was unusually hot and it seems this may have been the cause.

If my memory serves me well, which it doesn't always, I do not think there were gaskets there. I think they're also called "donuts."
