While going through catalogs and magazines l always see ad's that claim that their exhaust will give you a gain from 15% to 30% increase in HP.

Now if that was true then why doesn't Chevy just put that exhaust into the vette in the first place.

Is there any truth in their claims and what is the down side??

thanks

Alan

Sorry l didn't mean to say % l meant HP.

But if this is true then why didn't Chevy do this? There has to be a reason because this holds true for all years from the C1 thru the C6.

This is such an easy fix! Not cheap but quite easy and straight forward.

Does it interfare with the computer or emissions?

To start off with, noise restrictions for federal and local requirements. Also, noise restrictions for car owners. it is easy to change the exhaust for performance minded people, but for the average vette owner sound is more important (or I should say lack of sound)

Good Point!!

Now how does a person find out how loud one can go before he or she is cited for a summons?

Alan

PS I see there is a point of balancing between performance and noise.

Around where I live, most cops will leave you alone with a "reasonably" noisy system, ie. no open headers and the such. However, if you start blasting around quiet neighborhoods with your foot in the throttle, scaring small children and waking up the old folks, you might find a p.o.ed officer writing you up for a number of things.

most states have laws worded so vaguely that leo can write u up for no reason... if he (she) is having a bad day and you attract attention, ur screwed...if u are driving a "heavy" car that attracts attention, ur screwed...if the agency needs money for leo paycheck and u look prosperous,ur screwed ( some jerkwater towns actually do run on traffic 'fines')...innocent till proven guilty--fogetaboutit

on the other hand, if u are driving like a damn fool and deserve a ticket,a muffler violation might be a good thing compared to alternatives

From what I have heard around our streets here in Idaho coming out of the pipes of choppers you don't need to have anything to reduce your exhaust noise. In fact I'm darn tired of hearing it. Don't get me wrong I like the sound of performance but straight pipes on choppers is just plain inconsiderate of others.

Exhaust tone is a subjective thing so they pretty much leave it up to us to decide what they want. That being said, I don't see why the dealers don't offer an option for that. It would be a good way for them to make an extra few bucks quite easily. They already have the lifts there and if the cars are brand new, nothing should be rusted or stripped.

Cost is also an issue. The stainless systems are close to a G and not too many people probably want the cost of that on top of the car.

But the gains for your LT1/4 cars won't be as big as the gains for the L98 cars where each muffler only flowed through one tip! :L

I hear ya'. I see those early C5's w/ the black tips (before they went to chrome) that look - even sizewise - like they belong on a VW. Who the @#$! designed that exhaust look? To me the stock C5 exhaust looks ridiculous and sounds anemic. If I were a buyer at a dealership I would immediately opt for the "BIG BOY" exhaust! Just my .02...:D

i have ran straight pipes for the last 2 years. long tube headers, no cats, muffler eliminators and have no problems. i still think it's quiet to others like LS1 cars with loudmouth exhaust.

at below 3000 rpm it's very docile but above 3000 rpm you know i'm there :D

you be the judge :D
