Export Wiring

My spec's as the competion yellow vette in the earlier post.
It's all as it left the factory.
I think the euro lights work well other than they mount almost "flush" with the bodywork.Tunnelled in as the U.S. spec looks much better. It's not possible to rework what I have as the bodywork tunnel tapers in, stopping the mount and lense from being moved further back.
I've seen euro outer/U.S. inner on a few imports into europe to get through the reg's and frankly it looks a mess. If your going to do it, it's all or nothing in my opinion.
If there's a way to get mine through it's annual test using U.S. lights I'd be very happy to swap with you!

Hmmm....

The conversions for the C4s look realy nice. WISH THE C3s WERE AS LUCKY!!!!

I looked into fabbing my own C3 export lights myself. I couldn't find the right size plastic lenses to do it. However, I did figure out how to do the wiring. Maybe this will help shed some insight into how to wire custom lights.

I am pretty sure all Vettes (74-present) use a similar set up for the rear stop/turn/tail lights, barring idiosyncracies.

-For the amber lights, you need to tap into the DARK BLUE wire from the column to get the left side to work. You tap into the LIGHT BLUE wire from the steering column harness to run the right side. Essentially, the lamp harness wires are on the same circuit as the turn signal indicator of the corresponding side. You should run these from the dash along the center console and then through a gromet out of the rear cargo area of the car.

- The brake light wires are re-used from the original assemblies.

- The reverse lights would be relocated, but the harness staysthe same.

I am still looking for an export conversions for the 74-82 C3s or the money to fab my own!

3 Deuce. I've got a set of lenses on the way, and am going to get the wiring harness from my buddy. So hopefull in a week I can have something working.

Question is though. Do you want the 4 amber/red or two amber/red and two amber/ white harness?

Ok guys, I think I've got it figured out and the only issue I have run into, is........ Coupe 84-90... Convert 86-96.... Coupe 91-96 and ZR-1 90-95

So I need to work these issues and I can get a better idea of what needs to go on. But for now I've got the ZR-1 done

I would think the four red/amber would be better, that way you don't have to get into the backup light hassle and you can leave them stock....:xmas

I noticed in one of the catalogs, possibly Eckler's, that for the C5 they had a harness that came with the setup...!

I wonder if there are too many variations on the C4 so they don't bother....:crazy

Euro tail lights on my 1996

I put the amber/red lights on my 1996. I like how they are more flush with the body and I've always preferred amber turn signals; they are required in the front, so why not the rear? Also by being more flush with the body they can be seen more from the side of the car. I still worry about trucks and SUVs seeing the Corvette, though I do try to avoid them.

I ran wires from the front harness by the ECM for the left and right turn signal. You have to purchase new bulb holders for the signal lamps and stop/brake lamp, as the one that comes with the car will not fit the Euro lenses. Fortunately you can get the lamp housings at Pep Boys. I left the turn signal also going to the red portion of the lens, so I have quite a unique light show when I signal. The brake lights work as normal.

You must replace the cheap thermal flasher with a new electronic model, also available at Pep Boys. If somebody wants to buy my original lenses, make me an offer......I will not want to put them back.

Hope this helps.

Put up some pics of the lights if you could, or a link to see them..thanks:Steer

3 Deuce:
I'll have to borrow the digital camera next week to take photos. Just one of those things I haven't bought yet since I have access to them at work.

The lamp sockets (made by Conduct-Tite, aka Motormite) I got at PepBoys are #85867 for the 1157 (stop and tail) bulb, and #85866 for the (signal) 1156 bulb.

The electronic flasher is a EL12 made by Tridon Stant.

red/white setup

I actually prefer the red and white setup for all 4 taillights.

I have them on my 92.

But instead of messing with the back-up lights I have turn signals in all 4 taillights using amber bulbs.

Not the best picture of the taillights but you get the idea...

How does the amber come through with the red lenses? Does it intensify the red or does some of the orange bleed through? Love that Polo Green by the way...;)

I'm sure he is using amber bulbs in the clear lens area, for the turn signals. The red lens for stop and tail lamps uses a regular clear bulb.

In theory, the clear portion is for backup lights, but as he mentioned, he uses the clear for turn signals. Many non-USA license plates are wider than USA plates and fill up the area where the b.u. lights are located.

jpg is of the amber/red lens

They look the way Chevrolet should have made them....:BOW
