extended warranty question(all owners)

This goes out to all corvette owners. I need some advice on extended warranties. I have heard it’s not worth it to buy one. Anybody out there had work done on their car after the 36,000 warranty went out? Is all work on these cars expensive? Do most issues occur before the warranty goes out? I can get a 5yr/75000 mile “bumper to bumper” warranty for a little over a 1000. If small repairs are high it seems worth the 1000.

warranty

The Player, There are certainly valid considerations to exame when purchasing an extended warranty. Not the least of which is the expense (and yes most labor and parts for Vettes are expensive). In my opinion, I would purchase the GM extended warranty because it covers most anything except "wear and tear' issues, and secondly, your warranty work will be honored and guaranteed at any Chevy dealership. This is a very important consideration when one examines aftermarket warranties which are exclusive rather than inclusive in nature. One must read the fine print to make a determination as to whether the aftermarket warranty covers the "items" and labor that you desire. I think that some aftermarket are better than others, and I would suggest asking the service manager at your local dealership what their experience has been with the warranty that you are considering, exclusive of the GM warranty, of course. A major repair will certainly pay for the cost of a good extended warranty, as well as giving you the peace of mind that if something needs "fixin" you won't have to shell out big bucks to keep tha Vette on the road. There has been a fairly exhastive discussion concerning extended warranties on past posts, so you may want to access these as well.

Good luck!

I purchased an extended warranty for my 99 C5 when it was new from AAA. (has to be purchased before 12 months or 12,000 miles).

It cost me $1200, it was 7 years/100,000 miles bumper to bumper, no deductible and you could take it to your mechanic or the dealer. You pay for the repair and they reimburse you.

WELL WORTH IT, if you're keeping your car for that long. It says 7 years, but it's really 4 years, because the first 3 are under factory warranty.

I liked the fact that it covered everything minus wear items and I could have my mechanic fix it. It used it for about $300 worth of repairs.. . .

However, I had the same warranty through GE Capitol for my 93, but it was $50 deductible and 6 years, 70,000 miles, but that one paid for itself in no time. . .

I have not purchased one for my current car yet, I'll look into it in the Spring.

I bought one for 7-years/100,000 miles zero deductable from warrantybynet.com for a little over two grand. The gentleman sent to inspect the vehicle works for several companies and he said they are one of the better ones.

It is transferable and you can get some of your money back if you trade your car.

I haven't had the need for a claim yet.

I bought the GMPP from Ken Fitchner Chevrolet.

From the indate service of the car 72months/50K miles for around 1200 dollars. zero deductible.

I feel its the right one because its backed by GM.

I bought it in the 35th month of ownership and very glad I did.

Not that anything new has cropped up but if any of the earlier issues were any indication...its important to have an extended warranty.

Of course now the cars running great..no issues yet it sure is a nice peace of mind to know..I'll always have the ability to just drive it in and let them fix it.

Insurance companies are betting that on average the products they insure will cost less to repair than they take in on policies.

Much less. Enough to support their large burocracies and make a tidy profit.

I figure they are the experts so I don't bet against them unless I'm in a position where I couldn't comfortably afford to absorb the loss or am required by law to carry insurance.

In the long run, the insurance companies, just like the gambing sports in Nevada win and the customers (as a group) pay more than they get, much more.

TFor some peeple there is value to the peace of mind you get knowing you are covered by insurance, everyone needs to decide that for theirself.

I see the policy like I see medical insurance. On the average, any given individual pays more than they get from the policy. If they didn't, the insurance companies would go broke. However, if you are the person with the huge medical bill, it is a life saver.

I see the extended waranty insurance as a 'major medical', too. I can absorb some minor repairs, but if I have a major engine or transmission repair, I will be glad that I had the extended waranty. On the average I lose, but I buy it to protect myself from catastrophic loss. It seems worth it to me. On the other hand, I have never bought them for anything else except on a couple of cars.

Same here, bought from Ken at a discount. I have a friend who has gotten his money's worth, and wouldn't own a Vette without one. He just renewed it again for another two years.

GMPP, 200deduct, having a new HUD installed and Service Column Lock fixed. Just paid for itself! 3rd Vette for me, I'd say it's a must.

Old, but very important topic! The C5 has numerous computers; one alone can be $1,000 plus.

It is not like buying an extended warranty on a 2,000 TV; this is an expensive machine. I went w/ the GM extended warranty when I bought new in 2002.

The GM warranty is more expensive than the ones like 1source or warrantybynet. The local GM dealer was even trying to sell me an after market warranty. I asked about the GM extended warranty and he said it was more and was trying to get me to buy the other one. I have found a good mechanic that I trust that doesn't work for the dealer. I think I'll ask him if he has had trouble with the aftermaket warranties you get off the net like 1source. They look pretty promising and I would rather have him working on my car if needed.

My best friend (over 30 years) is a dealership mechanic, mostly with Chevy dealers. he is top in his field with all 9 ASE certifications possible. He was also the only mechanic at his dealership that was given Vettes and Lotus' for repairs when they came in. I trust his opinion (I dont have any reason not to)..

He says if I ever get an extended warranty MAKE SURE IT IS GMPP, the others in his opinion are crap that require many back and forth negotiations about what is covered, what is not, what they will authorize, what they have to try first etc... He is no longer a GM mechanic (now with Lexus) so he has no reason to promote GMPP, just easier to gets things covered and repaired with no hassle and less time lost without your vehicle.

Much has been written here on this subject. While I cannot speak about othere after market warranties, I have had two with Warranty Direct and have had no problems at all with questions about what they would or would not pay. The first was with a '96 Blazer that I purchased new along with a B2B 100,000 mile warranty. It now has 125K and enough warrantied replacement parts to almost catagorize it as 80% restored. :D

My current warranty is on the 2000 Vette. I purchased a 6yr/60K with $100 deductible. The initial cost was $1090.

The car had +/- 19K miles on it in Feb of '03 and has 40,303 today.

So far, Warranty Direct has covered:

L. Rear Axel Seal $ 460
Air Compressor $1,108
Both Fuel Tank Sensors (this morning) $ 886

Warranty Direct has paid $2454.
My out of pocket expense to date is $1,309.

Needless to say, I am a believer!

One thing I have discovered however (and this is NOT a problem with Warranty Direct) is to make sure your aftermarket warranty is portable from state to state. Some companies are not registered in all 50 states.

Good luck.

As requested, here is the information and pricing on the General Motors Protection Plan.

About the plan:
As an independent new car dealer, Fichtner Chevrolet is authorized by General Motors to sell the GM Protection Plan. We are offering the plan at a significant discount without sales tax. This amounts to a discount of several hundreds of dollars off of the MSRP of the plan!

Major Guard is a policy of General Motors Corporation. Be very careful of policies written by other companies that may no longer be in business when you need them! There have been hundreds of these companies going broke in the past. In addition, this policy is good at any GM dealership. The vast majority of dealerships will not honor any policy except those sold by General Motors. The GM Protection Plan protects your vehicle and assures that it is repaired to GM standards whenever necessary. Second, the plan is completely transferable to subsequent owners of your vehicle adding to the vehicle's resale value. The GM Protection Plan comes with a GM money-back guarantee of satisfaction. You get a full refund if you cancel the Plan within 60 days of purchase and no claim is filed. After 60 days, your refund is prorated, (less a small administration fee).

Major Guard provides 24-hour no cash needed towing and roadside assistance. Major Guard will authorize towing or emergency road service for any disablement of your covered vehicle, or will reimburse you up to $50 for these expenses. Benefits include towing, flat tire service, battery jump, out-of-gas fuel delivery and locksmith and key service. Major Guard will pay the charge to rent a replacement vehicle whenever the new vehicle limited warranty or Major Guard covered repairs require 2.0 or more manufacturers’ labor time guide hours to repair.

What does Major Guard cover?
It’s as simple as this: If it’s not on the very short list of what’s not covered, it’s covered!

WHAT’S NOT COVERED?
Maintenance services and parts, physical damage, glass, lenses, sealed beams, light bulbs, and tires. Components not installed by the vehicle manufacturer. Bumpers, sheet metal, body panels and parts. Carpet, hinges, trim, upholstery, convertible or vinyl tops, moldings or bright metal. Air and water leaks, wind noise, odors, weather-strips, squeaks, rattles, paint, rust carburetor, contaminated fuel system, exhaust system, catalytic converter, brake drums & rotors, shock absorbers, and batteries.

For any vehicle that is still inside the new vehicle limited warranty Period, Major Guard time and mileage limits start on the same day as you purchase the plan and from the odometer reading the day you purchase the plan. You may purchase the plan at any time but such coverage must be purchased prior to the end of the new vehicle limited warranty of 36 months or 36000 miles. Major Guard can be transferred when you sell your vehicle. Major Guard is recognized by dealers in the US and Canada. It makes sense to return to your selling dealer, but if you find it inconvenient to do so, you may use any commercial repair facility! Just refer to the Coverage Agreement for the appropriate phone number to call.

Major Guard can be purchased from any GM Dealer. To save big dollars, buy it from Fichtner Chevrolet. Many dealers mark-up Major Guard beyond GM suggested prices by several hundred dollars. We sell every plan at a discount saving you hundreds of dollars! Major Guard is honored nation-wide and it doesn't matter where you bought the plan!

I thought parts were the things that broke. Isn't that what a warranty is for? Aren't computers parts, or rear-ends or sterring stuff. Mr. Fichtner I don't understand.
