How many people take the GM extended warranty when they buy a new Vette? Or would take it if they were?

I'm faced with that decision right now and not sure if $1320.00 is worth it. I'm not sure if I will keep car beyond 3yrs as will probably buy a C6 in the 2nd year they are out, if worth it.

There have been other posts on this subject. Check out http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=33116[/URL]

I do not know quite how the GM Extended Warranty works, but after market warranties run from the day they are purchased and mileage is cumulative. You can purchase one as long as there is a specified amount of time remaining on the original. (Although in my case, the original had expired and I had the GM 30 Day Used Car Warranty)

Mine is Warranty Direct 4/60 @ just <$1,200. I recently talked to them and found out that Florida treats aftermarket warranties as Insurance, therefore companies are regulated by the state and reviewed for financial solvency and complaints every quarter.

That’s true of only a handful of states, but the benefit to the other consumers is knowing there is strength to the company. (Hopefully better than World Com or Lucent)

The other good thing about WD is that I can further extend the warranty on an annual basis for as long as I own the car. Of course cost will be predicated on previous claims.

I think that if I bought a new car, I'd wait until the MFGW was about to expire then get an aftermarket.

How does the GM extended warranty differ?

I work at a Chevrolet dealership. The GM extended warranty on a new vehicle begins after the manufactures warranty ends. So if you plan on keeping the car for a long time, it's a good purchase. If purchasing a used car it's based on the mileage at the time of purchase plus the mileage type of warranty you purchase. I have always purchased an extended warranty on any used vehicle. I did purchase a 1994 Corvette from work in April which was our 3rd vehicle and we didn't want to add another $1600 to the price and payments. Now we should have bought it because I think my opti-spark is going bad. My cost for the opti-spark is $468 and the water pump is $199. The labor is about $200 to $300. So maybe we were foolish but we rolled the dice and might lose. If I had it to do over again, I would have purchased the extended warranty.

Thanks,

Donna

Since you work at a Chevy dealer is the cost of the extended warranty the same after, say 1 yr, for a new 2004. I would get one on a used car too but am concerned about a new 2004. I guess it depends on how long I will keep it but also interested if the price is more astime passes, but still under factory warranty.

For comparison purposes, you might try looking on the web, in particular, "Autowarranties.com". That's the one I found, but I'm sure there are more out there. I recently bought a 2004 Vette and told the dealership BM that I'd think about his offer. I compared the rates he gave me to the ones I got back from "autowarranties.com", and the latter source gave me much lower rates for comparable coverage. As with the GM plan, this other one showed rates for all the parts and services that are NOT covered. I haven't decided what to do yet, but it will be a while before my original GM warranty expires.

I'd appreciate any input from anyone out there who has had experience with autowarranties.com.

To MTCRSR: The cost should be the same but we usually offer the extended warranty at a reduced rate at or close to the time of purchase. It just depends on the policies of the dealership.

To Gonetoalabama:

Be careful of aftermarket warranties. The might sound good and be less expensive but getting them to pay claims is another story. My opinion (for what it's worth), you are better off with a GM extended warranty. Really think about it.

Thanks,

Donna

i agree,i think one of those aftermarket companys went out of buisness recently.
i got the g.m.warrenty.i only had one chance to buy this particular warrenty.the original had just run out.its good to 75,000 miles.i have 37,000 now.so i think its a good choice.say something like the telescopic steering, door pod,the HUD,one of the many computers craps out.it will pay for itself right there.maybe it was a good omen because i only had one problem with a connector which i broke myself and fixed myself.just my opinion for whatever its worth.:cool
Todd.

My feeling is that I will wait until I'm into the factory warranty a few miles, like 10000 or so and a year down the road. Since I'm never sure how long I will keep a car (my 6th Vette so far) I want to wait. Definetly do not want my factory warranty to expire and not have an extended one if I'm going to keep the car several years. But I think, like a lot of people, I want to see what the C6 looks like, etc as I may decide to trade for a 2006 (in the 2nd year). Guess its a "whatever suits each individual best" game. I appreciate all the replies. Since I'm picking up my car at the Museum on the 26th of August and driving it back to Nevada over a 2 week period I'll get a good opportunity to see if I have any problems, etc. It will be a fun trip with lots of different road conditions, climates, etc along the way as I plan to spend a few days in Mich (going to Mackinaw Island), then Chicago (to see ex-wife), and on to Denver via Sturgis, South Dakota, and into the Rockies to Vail, etc and then through the desert back home.

gonna go show the car to the ex huh, should be a fun trip.make sure you brake the motor in properly.i was really tired when i read your post last night.i didnt realize that the car is brand new.you'll get another chance at the extended warrenty right before the origanal runs out.thats sorta the situation i was in,except i was buying the car right before the 3 year mark.they said this is your only chance at this warrenty.if i came back the next day,i would get the generic warrenty.i planned on it anyway so i never checked to see if this was true or not.dont sweet it enjoy your long cruise/bonding experience.and dont let the ex drive it;) :t '
aloha Todd.p.s.bring your favorite cds.

There are lots of choices with regards to GMPP. It is less expensive to buy when you pick up the car than to wait. If you wait you must buy it BEFORE the last day of the original warranty.
It seems to be best to buy the longest time period as it is prorated if you sell the car, ie you can get a rebate for the time not used.

One other thing. NCM delivery will change your date in service.
Just had a friend who almost missed his because he thought it was the date he picked up the car @ NCM. Turns out it was the date he paid for it.

I bet you will really enjoy your NCM delivery. Good Luck

I too have Warranty Direct 4/60, same as Tom Adams ( per his post on 8/15). I can tell you they are a first rate Company. Had the steering wheel lock problem and they paid the whole thing..and my covette service department charges $76.00 per hour labor. Check their web site out.....highly reccomend!!

I keep seeing references to "steering lock problem" and notice that snow0925 also has a 2000.

I've had my GM dealer check mine for outstanding recalls and there are none but I am concerned about this issue. It's probably already been discussed in another thread, but could somenone please describe this problem.

I hope like heck it doesn't show up "unannounced" and while driving!! :confused

Hi Tom:
Check out the C5 Technical Discussion Forum "Service Column Lock" there's 4 pages of info. Also I believe the problem only happens when you start you car not while driving....that would be horrible!! Good Luck. By the way I've had no other problems with my 2000 (23,000mi) how about you?

Mine's @ 24K miles and just had the LR Axel and Transmission seals replaced. No other problems at all. WD took care of everything.

4 pages of info.

Lordy, now I'm worried....I hate paranoia, don't you?;LOL

Before you make a decision you owe it to yourself to check out 1 Source. I have them and I am very well pleased. I last used mine when my front rt. wheel hub went bad. The replacement part was $734.00 through my mechanic. They overnighted the part at a much reduced price even my mechanic was amazed. If you noticed I said my mechanic and not the Chevy dealer and the wonderful service rendered there. Contact 1 source at www.1sourceautowarranty.com You won't be sorry.

My cost for Warranty Direct for 4 years 60,000 miles was only $1,200. It looks like they want around $2,000 for the same coverage. Seems a little high.

When we bought our 2003 AE I decided since I wasn't planning on using it as a daily driver, I was going to get an extended warranty. We decided that GMPP was what we were going to get. Only because I had never had any other warranty and was concerned about how GM would handle other warranty companys. When we did the paperwork on the car we negotiated the cost of the warranty into the price of the car, so we got the warranty at no extra charges (at least so we thought). Ours is a 6 year 50,000 warranty.

More on Warranty Direct

I took the baby in today to have a couple of repairs:

Major Brake Fade – caused by sticking motors after a trounce on the peddle and activation of ABS

and

Rattle from the AC Compressor

Repair costs were:

Brakes Diagnostic: $40 They ‘rehomed” the motors and brakes are fine.

AC Diagnostic: $80 Duh….they couldn’t see it vibrate and hear it???
------
$120

AC Compressor
Parts & Labor $1,108.00 The new compressor has a lifetime guarantee.

Warranty Direct does not pay for diagnostics and I have a $100 deductible so my out of pocket expense was $220.

The only thing I’m not too keen on is that they won’t pay the diagnostic charges and part of the problem there is I’m not too convinced that’s not just a dealer add on for more profit

All in all both my experiences with WD have been good, but after two outings and $200 in deductibles, had I to do it over, I think I would have purchased a plan with no deductible.

BTW, to snow0925...thanks for the tip. I found out that my stearing column had been serviced...one less thing to worry about.
