Several times I tried to set-off my factory alarm. I locked the door with the key and turned it the other way also. Heck everyway :D .
Then reached in the lowered window...poped the hood or opened the door from the inside.........NOTHING :cry

As I recall, it use to work.
Any tips where or what to look for :confused

Similar problem on my black 79. Was a bad alarm horn, dead. Found a working one on ebay and problem solved. Pull the horn and test it direct to a battery. I assume everything else on the same fuse is working. Mike

Good idea...thanks! My luck that would be toooo easy, I would be looking for some darn cut wire hiding somewhere that I would never find!

Era...so where is that alarm-horn anyway :D

Drivers side inner fender on the firewall, look kinda below the window washer bottle towards the firewall.

Thanks...will test it tomorrow :cool
Uh my washer bottle is on the Pass side. But I'll find it!

Hammer,
The '81's don't have a special horn for the alarm, the regular horn works with the alarm. If your horn works from the button, that isn't it. The alarm has it's own fuse too. You did activate it by hitting the power lock button, right?

Maybe it sensed the key fob in your pocket..;LOL
I honestly have never tried mine to see if it works !

Got my '82' last fall, and the door locks didn't work. I had a guy work on the locks plus numerous other things. Got it back a couple of weeks ago, decided to take it for a little ride to a town 20 miles away, parked the car , hit the power locks. I was gone for an hour or so, came back, used the key to unlock the car, got in, stuck the key in the ignition and turned the key -NOTHING, not even a click. Not remembering that the car had a security system and how it worked, I called for a tow truck to load it and take me back home. So $111 later I find out that the driver door lock wouldn't work, so will not deactivate the security, but the passenger side worked. Also, it was my wife's first ride in the car-'next time we'll take the good car'! So if one door doesn't work try the other door! If you don't disarm it , you won't start it! :mad

Hammer,

In an L81, one can test the alarm in many ways. You can hit the lock switch, and just close the door enough to allow the dome light go out (remember, the light takes 1 - 2 minutes to turn off). Then just open the door and cover your ears. If no sound comes out, the try the starter interrupt by trying to start the engine. You can also lock the door (window down), close it, wait for courtesy light to extinguish, and pop one of the T-Top locking levers open. Carefully lift the T-Top careful to not let the glass corners touch or get damage, and the alarm should set off.

I believe that the L81 shop manual has a test as well.

Thanks for the feedback fellas...
I was under the impression that in order to "activate" the OE alarm on my 1981 one had to use the door key...no?
As the power-lock button will not activate the alarm.
:confused

Can ya believe I've had this care since new...and never really fussed with the Alarm.:eyerole

Bro...if I am not mistaken, when you hit your power lock switch and close the doors..once the interior light goes out after it's delay timer has gone out the alarm is armed. Now here is where the key comes in...lets say you locked your car with the power locks..and your windows are down..if you reach in and unlock the doors with the power switch..then open the door the alarm will go off...now you need to put the key in the door lock to "deactivate the alarm/starter kill switch" you will know when you turn if off successfully as your blarring horn will stop and you will be able to start your car. Hope this info helps..

Does anyone else have a key fob that locks and unlocks the doors, and sets the alarm? Mine does, (non-functioning now) but I think its aftermarket.
