Failed smog test

My 2002 coupe, with 49,000 miles, just failed the Cal smog test.
It failed the NO (PPM) @ 15 MPH with a reading of 620.
The max reading is 424.
Any ideas of the cause?;help

Is the engine modified? If so, can you describe the mods?

What were the readings on the other gases?

Did you get the cats good and hot before you took it in?

The engine is stock, no mods and no chips to the computer were added.

All the other gases were were below the average.
%02-0.2, HC-1, CO-0.00, these readings were for both 15 & 25 MPH.
The reading for NO @ 25 MPH was 14.

The engine temp was up to normal but I didn't take it for a run.

While I don't have a solution to your smog test problem, I wanted to let you know that I had merged your two threads on the same subject to make it easier for you to follow any answers you get.

The issue is not engine temp, it's the temp of the catylitic converters.

Here's what I'd do to see if you can pass the 2nd time.

1) Get a bottle of Red Line Complete Fuel System Cleaner. Add the whole bottle, fill the tank then go for trip out of town to run the full tank through the engine.

2) Refill with fresh gas.

3) Drive on the freeway for 10 min in either fourth gear (man.) or 3 (auto) to heat up the cats then head for the smog station. Once you get near the smog station, drive in lower gears at higher rpm to keep the cats hot. Pull into the station and hope they can get you on right away.

What difference the hot catylitic converters made. I didn't clean the fuel system as you suggested, just took it out for a run before the test and
left it running until they could get to it. The NO readings went to 0 from 620.
