For the 2 years I was there it did not take long to become a local. The people are great. Problem is most folks go for a couple weeks see the sights and never get to meet real Hawaiians. If you get off the beaten path and set down with some of the locals you find they have hearts big as the outdoors, and if you make a friend...it is for life. You have to learn and understand the culture, and also understand why they sometimes dislike the tourists because of the lack of respect for the islands they bring with them. The ground is sacred. Not only that but what will really grab you is to understand the sprituality which is ingrained in every true Hawaiian. I learned all the stories, myths, legends and was blown away by all of it. My wish is that I could have stayed...but I will return to the islands to stay someday.
A great story is why no true hawaiian will hurt or eat a turtle...
The story goes that a fisherman many years ago caught a turtle in his net. After taking care of the fish he was ready to fix the turtle for dinner. Then he noticed a tear in the turtles eye...he was so taken by it that he returned the turtle to the sea and vowed to never hurt his brother from the sea again. As far as I know it still stands today. To be invited into ones house is a rare treat, even better is to be allowed to break bread....a treat you will never forget. It makes me sad to see what man has done to the islands in the name of profit and greed. Cut everything down to lay in the concrete and build another hotel...ruining the land...
No wonder Peli rumbles on the Big Island...

I tell you my freind, a tear is falling from my eyes as I'm typing this out to you, you have hit the heart and soul of what we (Hawaiians) have gone through, through the past century, and it still continues today, thank you so very much for the reading here, so more of you out there have more of an understanding on how we "Hawaiian's" feel, live, breath, and to right what was wronged to my people so many, many years ago.
We (as every other culture and nationality's) are proud people and proud to say that we are a Hawaiian, and we we'll always welcome the outsider into our land as long as they give us the respect and to respect our land and what is secrete to us and our believes, and not try to force they're believes on to us.

You are 100% correct from what I have seen Eagle. I have met many kama'aina and they are the friendliest people I have met. Their ways and customs may be different to the casual tourist but like you said get to know them and get to know the real Hawai'i. People like my friends who have shops in the International Market and my "Beach Boy" friends deal with the tourists all the time but get them away from all that and they are some of the best people you will ever meet. Kalani is a shining example of how the people of Hawai'i really are and I am proud to call him my friend. Maybe I am ho'okama'aina.

One of my favorite songs is by Billy Kaui ... Waimanalo Blues. It expresses a lot of what you said about the greed and disgrace to the land that happens just for the sake of the tourist.

Mahalo so much for your compliment Hrtbeat1, yes you and Eagle are a Ho'okama'aina most definetly.
Hearing mention about the Country comfort's (and Billy Kaui) song "Singing Waimanalo Blue's" brings back so much small kid times memories from back in the early to mid 70's.
I love the song by "Kalapana", "Naturaly" though it's not about that subject as "Waimanalo Blue'' was about, but still nice lyrics all the same.

I remember going to a place to eat in Kailua called "Pirate Bully Hayes" and listening to (spelling wrong) Celleio and Copono sing. Spent many days and nights out on the beach,Bellows in Waimanalo...The place is beautiful. Tourists never get past Honolulu or Waikiki. Shame they never get to see the real Hawaii....or learn the history. I was very surprised at first, then very saddened to find the Marine Base in Kaneohe is really one of the largest burial grounds from back in the day when the Island Chiefs fought for control. Hundreds were forced over the cliffs into the water. When I was there in 1971 some kids playing around on "Kansas Tower" unearthed some remains which were promptly and quietly returned to the hallowed ground.
They never get to see the red dirt of the cane fields where many Hawaiian's died in pretty close to slave labor to produce the sugar. Or how King Kamehmeha came to rule the islands...or how it was illegal to speak Hawaiian for many years. Cook should have taken one look at the islands turned around left them alone. What I wouldn't give to see the islands back then in pristine condition before they "paved Paradise and put in a parking lot"

You must be a newbie to this forum huh, Sorry Brah, the "rice" term does'nt mean much over here in Hawaii, as it does on the "mainland" we tend to appreciate the hard work that one put's into they're ride, either a domestic or import, it does'nt matter at all, we, being on a small island, have more important things to worry about then catergorizing different cars, makes, models, etc.
Of course you not living here, I can understand for your thinking, so Mahalo for you point of view.
And be the way, theres pretty much nothing that can be said about my car that hasnt been said already, good or bad, and even if there hasnt' I've decided to fix her up the way that I decide to, cause it's impossible to make everyone happy, and believe me, I'm the type that would really try to.
My good buddy said to me one day, "you pay the payment, insurance, gas, fixit bill's, and everything else, why and how in the world do these others, who dont know you in person, are they going to tell you what, when and how to do with your car? It's unbelieveable the gul some people have when they dont personlly like something, that you do, want, are, or what ever reason that they feel that they can impose they're personal feelings on to you, to a point to where it's pretty much telling you what they think you should do with your personable things"
and the thing that get's him most upset he say's is, "the way people will say these things, very nasty, and at times, not being so classy, and sometimes will end up being personal attacks at you"

well let me add a couple of more thing's here, you being that you work in a GM part's place, being the manager there and along with that, being born in the 60's, you of all people should know that it's not a "rice" thing to do when someone decides to put a wing on they're car, wether or not it's fuctional or not (mine is by the way), remember the Plymouth "super bird"? what about the same car company putting out the Dodge "Daytona" (the car version)? come on you remember dont you? how's about the Plymouth "road runner"? hmmm, ok, let's try going Ford, the 60's mustang had one to, Buick came out with the "GS" that also had one, back to Ford, they also had the "Torino" Chevy had they're share of car's with wing's, "Camaro", a special high performance "Nova" with the 396 engine had some with wing's on them, Pontiac had the "Firebird", any more examples?
One other "fact" the original term "Rice" was towards the Japanese Motorcycle industy, they used to be called "Rice rocket's" remember that?
So when the Japanese started coming out with they're imported car's, it was a classless why of catergorizing they're car's....................just to let you know one more thing......................I am Half Korean along with the Hawaiian and other thing's, and take the term "Rice" personal from people like you who know doupt have plenty of brains...........................but sometimes fail to use them, but what do I know, I'm just a native who swing's on trees in the middle of the Pacific.
Just to remind you, the subject had to do with my nitrous purging, not "how badly can you bash my wing", we've been there, done that already.......but I know, I know, you just couldnt help yourself with the bashing wing thing yeah?

First off...Coop is new here and may not understand how we do things. Regardless of who you are and or what you are driving we all accept each other. There will be NO disparaging remarks about another members car. It would indeed be a dull world if all Corvettes were exactly the same. Personal preference makes them all unique, such as ourselves.
Second...It is quite possible Coop has not seen the earlier threads concerning the wing our Brother from Hawaii has on his car and his responses.
Third...Da Punch probably is tired of folks making comments on his car, put yourself in his shoes and imagine how you would feel if folks were to make remarks about how you had individualized your vette. My vette is Red, I could just as easily say something about all vettes that are not red...or those that do not have ZR-1 rims, or have a tv built in the dash.

Forth....Please remember when you point your finger...there are 3 fingers pointing back at you...

Lastly...Before you comment on anothers property, think if you would like hearing it yourself.

For the record... I commend the Man for being committed to making the corvette reflect his personal taste regardless of what others think. For those who have never been there Hawaii is like another world. The diversity of the native population being a combination of mostly polynesian, asian and caucasion lends itself to a much different outlook on life and material things. Wear a grass hula skirt in downtown Dallas , Texas and folks would think you are nuts, but in downtown Honolulu no one bats an eye.
Let us all be more accepting...

Hey, it's me back to normal once more, soory about light explosion there.:eek I wrote that at around 1:00 am after going through a very, very bad day, I wont do into details about that and bore all of you, but I was looking back at the topic last night and it really caught me at a bad time after reading it again and I guess I sorta lost it.
The poeple who know me know that I'm an a very good hearted person and will do what ever I can to poeple help, make them happy and laugh, thats just me, but I do have a limit to what I can take from someone, though it is a rarerity for this to happen but it does.
