On the 65 327 engine the number one cylinder is the front driver side right? Sorry but its been so long since Ive ben under a hood I cant remember. Thanks for any replys.

Yep, 1, 3, 5, 7 starting at the front on the drivers side and 2, 4, 6, 8 on the passenger side from the front.

Thanks for the reply . Now I have another question, after checking the timing it was so far advanced it was way off the scale. When I brought it back to where it was supposed to be it ran but with no power. I had to advance it back to close to where it was. I set the dwell and it runs good except it has a hesitation on acceleration. Iam wondering now if this could be a carburator problem since I just installed plugs ,wires, distributor cap, rotor , points and coil. Dwell is at 30deg. and the timing who knows anyway any help would be appreciated. By the way this is the 327/250h.p. carter 4 barrel.

Yep ... and at the cap it is 1 - 8 - 4 - 3 - 6 - 5 - 7 - 2 clockwise.

First set the dwell at 30*. Then disconnect the vacuum advance hose. plugging the hose going to the carb. set timing at 8*. With the timing light still connected, reconnect the vacuum line to the canister. The timing should advance quite bit. Adjust the idle to approx 500 RPM, disconnect the vacuum line again and plug and check that the timing is still at 8*. Adjust if neccessary and reconnect vacuum hose.
With the engine at idle, slowly give it some gas and see if the accel pump shoots two streams of gas into the carb.

Thanks for the reply, I think I had it backwards .I pluged the hose to set the dwell and did not for the timing . And yes today I looked in the carb while giving it gas and it did shoot gas on both sides like you say. Tomarrow Ill try to reset the timing ,its frustrating when it runs good other than on a hard acceleration.

I learned to set dwell when just cranking the engine with the coil wire unplugged from an old time mechanic. Always still right on when I would check it running. He said he didn't like to start an engine with improperly adjusted points.

Timing has to be set with the vac hose disconnected and plugged to isolate the vacuum advance unit.
