A follow up to my recent tune up. Today Pcolavette (Steve) stopped by and we installed my new distributor cap, rotor and coil. We also replaced a defective temp sensor. The car has a momentary flat spot when you first hit the throttle. After that it runs like a bat out of hell. (the tune up and newly installed cat were a big part of that)
We tried adjusting the TPS position but the flat spot remains. No error codes but we did notice the air filter cover's tab was broken so the cover isn't on tight on one side which explains the sucking sound when you hit the gas.

Any thoughts???????

You can use a wiretie to tighten down the AF cover. Mine was done like that when I got it and it worked. Only pride forced me to buy a new cover.

You might also check the 'O' ring on the MAP sensor connection to that same cover. Mine was missing and after I replaced it, it seemed to be somewhat quieter but I can't say because I did it at the same time I replaced some of the exhaust system.

I'll just reuse the original for now until I order a new "open faced" one. Hopefully that's where the flat spot is coming from. :)

Timing? Advance it another 2 degrees. See if that helps. Did you forget to reconnect the vacuum line? :D

I'm picking up a timing light today to check it. We didn't remove the distributor, just replaced the cap.coil and rotor so the vacum lines are intact. I'll look a bit closer though today now that the toothache has eased up a bit. It's hard to trace lines when you have one hand on your jaw....:cry

Get that Craftsman unit at Sears with the dial back. That's the one I have and I love it.

Thanks Bob......I'll head out in a bit. I just started the car and it's still got that dead spot when you first hit the throttle.:mad The good news is it now starts faster since changing the coolant temp sensor.
Just cooling off inside the house now since flushing the radiator in the 89' mustang I bought my son. Man it's sweltering outside. :ugh

When you time it dont forget to pull the EST wire off. I think it is brown perhaps with a tan connector. Cant really remember it has been a while since I have looked at it. Maybe try putting some chevron techron in with your next fill up, that stuff works pretty good. I doubt it would be the filter lid, all you would be doing is getting more air in.

Was this his punishment for stripping the spark plug on your Vette?

<slam> I sentence you to 5 years in a RUSTANG. Case dismissed!

;LOL;LOL Actually the son who stripped the hole has the Z-24 cavalier.....it's my 16 year old I bought the rustang for....:) I have a neighbor who made me an offer I couldn't refuse. 89 convertible, the top is in EXCELLENT shape, the rear glass is like new, 132K miles, interior in super shape, all the lights work and the only issue is a noisy throw out bearing in the clutch. I haven't even registered the thing yet but I'm thinking of covering it with a tarp so the neighbors don't see it...;LOL

Actually the only abuse is he doesn't get to drive the vette. All his buddies have seen it and they break his b***s about not being able to use it. :)

;LOL That's why I waited until the kids were gone before I bought my Vette. I might have succumbed to the begging. ;LOL

He's not learned to drive a standard shift..............yet. So it's easy for me to say "NO"..:)

Of course after he's become proficent(sp) then I too will probably succumb....:)

Hey Len, What's the Verdict ?

Hey Buddy ! I just was wondering if you had had a chance to check Ole Blutiful's timing ? If I keep hanging out here in the C4 forum's, I might wind up back in another 1 !!!!!

Hey Steve....not yet but my mechanic said I shouldn't have to touch the timing. I'm thinking I should have gapped the plugs before letting Bryan put them in so I'll remove them this weekend, check for any cracks and gap/reinstall them. I was gone for 6 out of the 8 plugs so anything could have happened. :)

Fair Enough...

However, as good as she run's after getting past that "Dead Spot", I'd say the plug's as gapped out of the box are going to be pretty close ! However, it is alway's the simple thing's overlooked, which come back to haunt us ! tell Brian & Chris I said Hi:w, Later Bro,

How well I know...;LOL I'll check the timing this weekend. In the meantime at least that raw fuel smell is gone when I start it and with the new Cat, no noises.:)

update on the flat spot saga:

One plug was only hand tightened.....another had NO GAP at all. Regapped all the plugs, tightened to specs, cleaned the TB, set the TPS and IAC to correct voltages. The car is now a bat out of hell. Oh how I love the smell of rubber in the morning....;LOL
