I'm looking for the best overall sound from my exhaust, but have read many mixed reviews on Flowmaster/Dynomax. I'm looking for more growl and rumble without being too overwhelming. I still want to wake the neighbors, but also want to be able to hear the radio.

Any input would be helpful.. :beer

I had Flowmasters, 40 series, two chamber installed, What a mistake. They sound great and people turn when they hear me going by. But inside the car, the resonance at low speeds is very loud. 50 series, three chamber have far less resonance than what I used.

50 series Flowmasters

Hey, thanks for the tip. I have made many, too many (wrong)decisions in the past with other cars, and hated the results.

Thanks for the insight, Have a good night.

There are lots of choices even between Flowmaster and Dynomax. For instance, HPG wrote he had Flowmaster 40's and made a mistake, but were they the Original 40's or the Delta series?
Delta's are inserted to help reduce the sound in and out of the car without affecting performance.
Basically, I'd suggest you go to their website (You can hear examples on flowmasters url) and a good muffler shop near you to hear the differences and ask questions. A shop near me carries everything you can imagine and he actually drew the design differences on a sheet of paper and explained the posssilbe results based on design.
That's what I did and actually did decide on the Flowmaster 40 Delta series over everything I heard. And I luv the results!
Mufflers will also sound different depending on your engine output, exhaust pipe size, etc...

I just had the flowmaster 40 delta series installed today with x-over and it sounds great. The muffler shops should have a chart with interior sound levels if you get 40's get the deltas, the 50's are a little quiter but are almost twice as big and heavier.

Last year I put the Dynomax's on my 1989 vert. The rumble was great but the resonance drove me crazy. I replaced them with The Flowmaster delta 50's. They sound great without that annoying resonance. I can even hear my radio again.

Im looking for exhaust for my 86' too but i dont know what to get. Flowmasters are nice but like all of you i dont want it to annoy the hell outta me while im in it. How about magnaflow or borla, are they any better than dyno or fm's?

Wake the neighbors? You'd come closer to waking the dead with Flowmasters! My FM's has resonance but I don't mind it. They are extremely loud though.

Borla Answer

I have Borla on my car now and they sound a little too "importy".

I agree with JrdnsEdu. The sound you get is the result of the total exhaust system, with the muffler having the most effect. The Magnaflows are a beautiful system but they cost 3 times what FlowMasters cost (based on a local bid). FlowMasters are basic and raw, but certainly workable; and a lot nicer looking than the stock muffler. I have FlowMaster 40's. They sound sharp and deep, but they resonate badly. I have insulated my car so the sound is tolerable inside but still awesome outside. I plan to change the tips soon with some stainless models that are a little longer. I expect this extra length out past the rear bumper will help quiet things down a bit.

I have a set of Dynomax installed on my 1988 Coupe. Originally went for them because of the cost and I needed something quick to replace the worn out stock system. While I was at it I also went with true duals from the front to the back (no cats at all). I must admit it is a little louder than I expected but I have gotten several comments on how good it sounds. If you go this route you will also have to deal with or live with the resonance as well. I plan on adding an X-pipe or at least a cross over to help minimize the resonance. With this setup you have to bump the radio up at normal cruising speeds (55-75), and when you really get in the throttle IT IS LOUD and will get attention, but it sounds REALLY good...at least I think so and several people have agreed. It's all a matter of tast I suppose. Good luck on your choice and I hope you are not dissapointed.

Flowmaster vs Dynomax

It seems to be a 50/50 split opinion between Flowmaster and Dynomax to which system is better sounding. I guess I could'nt go wrong with either system, I guess I'll flip a coin. Maybe I'll do one Flowmaster and one Dynomax and split the difference, it may be the first Flomax system ever installed.;LOL Just kidding...

Everyone, thanks for the info, I do appriciate it. :beer

May I humbly suggest you trash both the Flowmaster and the Dynomax idea. IMO they are both cheap junk....Dynomax is built cheap and IS cheap, Flowmaster is the same but they have the audacity to charge more. They are both tin-can aluminized garbage and will rust out from under you in a blink.

Your vette deserves a better cat-back, may I suggest looking into B&B Tri-Flo or Magnaflow......both are much superior to Flow-crap.
Leave the flowmasters to Mustangs and brats.

Have you heard of magnaflow? flowmaster, dynomax and so on are for big noise, if that's what you like.
