My buddy called me, mid day, and asked me if I could be at his shop at 5:30, to put the mufflers on... Well, I couldn't pass that up, not for the amount he was asking for!!!! (Ended up being $25, in the end!!). So, off came the factory trash cans..ehhh, mufflers, and on went the 40 series Flowmasters... Beautiful sound... yes, there is a bit of interior resonance, but that has never bothers me with these mufflers, I enjoy it... But, if finally SOUNDS like a Corvette should!!!
When I first pulled up, at my buddy's shop, he opens the door, and says "Now I can see why you want these on, I can't hear that thing run!!!!"... Well now you can :)

Jeff
PS- I ended up with 2 1/2" offset in/center out. Cut the factory mufflers/tips off, re-welded the factory LT1 tips back on, with the hanger being welded to the outlet of the muffler... VERY stable, nice install! I'll post pictures tomorrow, if it stops raining!

Well there goes my commission from Borla...

;LOL ;LOL ;LOL ;LOL

Nah, not at all.. Next year, maybe, but I had to figure cost into my needs right now.. i've dumped a bundle in the car in the last two weeks, so the option of going the cheaper route, with Flowmaster, as opposed to the big bucks, with Borla was an easy decision... This time next year, may just tell a different tale :beer

jbaker, do you get that nice throaty exhaust sound like the older Corvettes? I still have the factory mufflers and they're quiet until I hit the throttle hard, then you can hear the exhaust roar, but I think I'd rather have that deep speed boat type of sound, if that's what the Flowmasters do.

It's funny you'd say that.. I always compare to the sound of a nice boat, too... This gave it a good, throaty rumble, and when you get on it, it's really nice... Around 2kRPMS, cruising speed, it makes it's presents known the most... Over all, I'd say, for what it costs, it's definitely worth it!

Yeah, between 2K and 5K, they REALLY scream and it brings a :D to your face everytime. I even had a buddy rev the car for me while I stood behind it listening to that beautiful rumble.

I realized that even though it was loud at first, it actually got louder after a week. Go figure...

Yup, I've always found that with Flowmasters, there's almost a 'break-in' period for them where they get a little louder :).

Guess that means I shouls be driving the car this week !!

I want to put flowmaster 40s or 50s on my 81 but my exhaust guy said it would be a waste of money. He said since the 81 is a single exhaust, the 40s won't make much difference over the factory installs (he said the 40s and 50s work best on dual exhaust) anyway, anybody agree with this and has anyone put 40s or 50s on their 81?...thanks, Kevin

Flowmaster 40's on a Lincoln

I put a pair of Flowmaster 40 series mufflers on my 1998 Lincoln COntinental...it has the 32 valve intech V8. It also has single exhaust with split twin tailpipes, and the mufflers mount just like a Corvette.

I noticed an immediate increase in sound (so did my wife, and she hates it)....and they do get louder. I took the car in for an emission inspection last week and the technician loved the sound of the car...

Anyway, I intend to put a pair of 40 Flowmasters on my 86 Vette in the next couple of weeks....love 'em

Well, like I said, at an idle, all the way up to 2500 RPM's it sounds mean, then it quiets down, but, I'm also thinking they may have a period of break in.... At least I hope :)

Either way, it's a big improvement over stock... I really like it at highway speeds, at least people KNOW your beside them !!

Is that a DOHC engine? They really sound much different than the OHV engines. They seem to rev higher, but not as "tough."

I have a set on the ZR-1 and love them...They sound best at around 3k rpms to 5k rpms by the way they are 3 chamber...

Hey edmond

Yes, the Lincoln had the DOHC engine....it is supposed to be a detuned version of the Mustang Cobra engine, similar to the engine in the Lincoln Mark VIII.

It really runs pretty good, and the flowmasters sound throaty and powerful...I have had several comments at gas stations when starting it up...my son calls it dad's hotrod lincoln.

Sure does not run like the Vette....

Does that mean the Vette runs good, or bad?

Did you have the stock tips welded on? I've always liked the sound of the flowmasters, but never thought much of their tips.

Well, I didn't get a complete Flowmaster system, and just buying 2 40 series allows you to use any tailpipe you want (just a universal type muffler), so I had my stock LT1 tips welded back on. I'm going to spray the mufflers black, so they blend in a little better back there.. Right now, they are standing out like a sore thumb !!

I've got Flowmaster 40 Series on my 91, The drone when cruising was annoying at first, I almost removed them, but they sound so sweet when you open it up. Eventually they grew on me. I am getting ready to install 2149 headers and the hooker front y-pipe I'm wondering how much louder it might get.

I just put 50s on my 84 and I love the sound. I am looking at some LT1 tips to finish the look.

I'd expect little or no change.

Intreresting; I get no resonance as many complain of. Perhaps it is because my tips stick out so far, which is rough on the shins, at times. The 3" TPIS system just squeezed into the length, driving the tips out.

Hmmm. I think I like the sound of that.
